He could not help but feel unsettled as he traversed the territory, heading toward the outer reaches where he planned to do a bit of patrolling. He was not worried about Poppy - she was faster than his packmates, and could probably make it to his side if she found herself being pursued. Rather, he was worried for his own place in the pack, and what it might mean if he had to protect the girl from one of his packmates. He'd tried to make it clear that she was his property by thoroughly scentmarking the girl, but sometimes things like that wouldn't stop a determined wolf.

He liked to think better of his packmates. But he'd thought better of Valette, too.

Thoughts thus clouded, the male ambled on toward the borders, moving in a way that made it clear he had something heavy on his mind.
Cebra May be able to cheer him up a bit! One of her favorite things about Mawk is he's half dog ;)

Cebra had been getting better and better as the days passed on and as she got up early to patrol today, there was an energy about her that hadn't been there before. She had things to get better for now, Cyron was home and she had agreed to mentor Keoni in fighting. She had smelled something odd around the pack recently, it belonged to an animal and it smelled similar to a wolf but....not. It reminded her of Mawk in a way, his scent was slightly different than anyone else's too.

As she made her way along the borders occasionally rubbing her scent against a bush or tree she spotted Murdock up ahead of her. Without thinking she chuffed to him and walked forward to greet him, having heard of him and seen him around but never properly met before. "Hello! We haven't met yet!" She greeted before she recognized the distant look in his eyes.

It also struck her suddenly that that scent was all over him and she sniffed the air curiously. "Are you alright?" She asked, not wanting to be rude by immediately starting off asking why he smelled odd. It wasn't a bad scent but it was definitely interesting.
Murdock glanced up to see Illecebra coming toward him. He didn't know her well, but knew of her, of course. They'd been in the same pack for some time, now, and saw each other at pack hunts and around the territory. But she'd never made an effort to speak to him before, and Murdock had never had much time for married women unless they were the type to fool around.

He wasn't sure he got that vibe from Illecebra.

"M'fine," he replied, stopping long enough for her to catch up. "Headin' to the borders. Yourself?"
Well.....alright then. Cebra wasn't one to push for information if someone didn't seem to want to talk and Murdock definitely didn't seem to want to talk. "Just heading out on my daily patrol." She said and after a moment's hesitation she finally blurted it out "what's that smell? It's kinda familiar... Mawk kinda has it but.... different?" She asked curiously giving the teeniest wiggle of her nubby tail.
Of course, Murdock knew at once what scent she was talking about. Poppy was the only odd scent he had on him, and while he'd never associated dog scent with Illecebra's mate, he supposed the man did have a certain look about him that didn't come from any wolf. "A dog," he replied. "I got a little dog, now. Name's Poppy. You'll see her around. Little white thing with brown spots."

He did not say that she was not for eating - that much would be obvious, wouldn't it?
Her ears shot up and her eyes widened with surprise. She had very little knowledge of dogs but she knew enough to understand they were somewhat similar to wolves but they didn't really...belong in the wild. However she didn't say so, instead she smiled "I really hope I meet her. She's alright? If anyone gives her trouble...well...I'm sure you'd give em hell for it yourself" she began to say she'd beat em up but changed her mind. It reminded her of how Mawk had been treated by....the name escaped her mind but a female in Ganador Bypass had treated him like he was wrong because he had dog in him.

"I know how mean wolves can be to those who are different" she simply said in a softer voice. She wasn't entirely speaking of Mawk at all then but of how she was raised to hate men because of their different gender.
Holy shit, thought Murdock, brows creeping up further and further and further as Illecebra went on. First words she'd ever said to him, and it was already a bit much for the older male. He was glad he wouldn't have to worry about Poppy being eaten by the woman, but damn, did she have to talk so much? And get so deep so fast?

"Yeah," he said uncomfortably, agreeing somewhat, but mostly just wondering what sort of chip the woman had on her own shoulder. Life sucked, but you just had to get over it. "I mean, I haven't personally experienced that. But I guess."

He stopped to sniff at a scent marker. Valette, two days ago. "You were gone for a while, huh?" he asked her, trying to steer the conversation back toward smooth waters.
Illecebra didn't notice how uncomfortable she had made him but when he agreed..kinda...she gave a quick nod. She didn't stop to mark her scent again but slowed her walk when he paused. At his question she tensed up and looked at him before once again nodding. "Yes...I..had some troubles" she murmured softly looking quite uncomfortable herself. She had told Valette what happened pretty much but other than that she hadn't even told Mawk the full extent of what she had done to deserve these injuries.
Oh no! Everywhere Murdock tread, there was another verbal landmine. At Illecebra's mention of troubles, Murdock let out a low huff - too quiet for all but him to hear - and silently grappled for a graceful exit from the topic. "Ah, good old Nikai," he said loudly, sniffing at one of the fresher markings around. "Always on the borders, that kid."

He didn't know where Valette had gone wrong with Ezra, considering what a great kid Nikai was. Steph, Clary, and Keoni seemed alright as well, even if the older girl was something of an enigma to the earthy man.
The silence was Awkward for illecebra so she busied herself by inhaling the scents along the borders. When Murdock spoke she smiled hesitantly "I've never really talked to Nikai...I'm more familiar with his sister Keoni. Good kids the both of them" she said kindly.

As they continued on she spoke again "not surprising though, with Valette as a mother. The woman has a good head on her shoulders...sometimes she doesn't make the best choices but she does her best" she said thoughtfully.
"That's the one that doesn't talk, right?" Murdock asked, having not really pinned a name to the pale girl he'd encountered a time or two. He'd heard Keoni bandied about, but he wasn't sure if that was an affectionate nickname or what. Soon enough, his attention slipped again.

"What sort of decisions?" he asked curiously, ears perked in clear interested. He wanted to know what Illecebra thought Valette had done wrong. Usually he tried to stay away from gossip, but he didn't know all that much about their alpha, and any information on her was worth pressing for.
Illecebra nodded silently in response to Murdock's question about who she spoke of. The next question however made her pause and flatten her remaining good ear. "I...Do not respect her decision to stay out of the war. Blackfeather Woods needs to be taken care of. From what I've seen they are a band of brute's who kidnap and harm innocent children and attack with no honor and they get a sick pleasure from the pain they inflict." She spoke hesitantly at first and then became more forward.

"I get that my judgement is affected because they stole my baby. But if they can steal a child and refuse to return him to the parents who bothered to seek him out, who knows what else they can do." She muttered. Shaking her head slowly she thought about if there was anything else she disagreed with but really she didn't know Valette all that well at all. "Then again, I don't know her. I'm not friends with her. I can assume she has good reason" she tried to amend.
Murdock did not expect the protective streak that rose up in his chest. The conversation hadn't been going to well, but now, it turned almost hostile as Murdock hurried to defend his alpha. "Well, why aren't you fighting them?" he asked waspishly. "She's got kids to worry about, too. You can't just run off and leave your kids to fight a war. What, you expect her to send everyone else out? She can't make that decision for them - not even as alpha."

He huffed, turning away from the idiotic woman. "Valette's doing the best she can with the situation. I'm sure she wouldn't stop you if you decided to go and get yourself killed."

With that, the male stalked off, feeling a tiny bit guilty, but mostly just glad it hadn't been Steph he'd gone off on.
Illecebra stared wide eyed as Murdock went off on her for responding honestly to a question he had asked. "You're the one who asked asshole!" She shouted after him, her hackles rising as the hurt and offense sank in. She snapped a growl at his retreating form and stalked off in the opposite direction muttering things to herself like "shouts at me and runs away" "coward" "he shouldn't have asked" until her anger fizzled out and burned away.
