He was getting old enough now, and comfortable enough with Drageda's wolves and territory both, that he felt okay wandering outside Hougeda on his own. He went down to the lake most mornings to search for minnows and cattails, which he returned to Hougeda if he found them. The cattails were good play things for the younger pups and their insides made for a soft bedding material—he often slept on a pile of it himself. The minnows were just yummy, but they were too fast for him, and he'd only ever caught one.

After dropping off two cattails in the ferns outside the rendezvous, Ephraim spun around and headed back out into the forest. This time he didn't curve up toward the lake, but continued heading through the trees until he reached the place where the pack's scent was strongest. He innately knew this was the edge of their claim and stuck to it, investigating the outer edge of Drageda with his nose but never stepping foot beyond out of bounds. Instinct bid him to pee on a spot that seemed a little weaker than the rest, and then he was off again, threading north as he went.
