from the very beginning (and until the very end) the three echoed one another in appearance, except for the most minute detail—their eyes. they had been identical in their hue, there is a difference in their contrast; narcissus’s eyes are the richest, the darkest; anemone’s are bright, iridescent; and hawthorne, the youngest of the three, has eyes that are dull, yet soft. the three could be no more different than one another than night and day. anemone, the bite and the bark; narcissus, the grit and the nerve; hawthorne the heart and the soul.

but, if there was one thing for certain, it was that there had been no bond such as their own. for they were inseparable adventurers in their youth, ambitious adversaries! and ultimately, together they could conquer; there could not be one without the other, for they were whole, together. the heartbeat and the air that they breathe and the mind. they had been clairvoyant to one another.

they had been three, and they had been one.

hawthorne had grown ill of this collective identity. he'd grown unsure of his place in the world. and without pause, one day he'd simply ventured off. and he found, as the hours passed and he'd kept walking, there was little impulse to turn around and go home.
