Nilak was born further north of the Teekon Wilds in the cold arctic to a pack leading pair Uyarak, his father, and Angerut, his mother. Nilak's youth was about as normal as expected, Uyarak would train him in hunting and pack life and Angerut was always nearly a paw-step away, ready to comfort him no matter the injury and there were injuries.
Nilak was born an only pup, the winter had been a harsh one and his mother had been exhausted and malnourished during the pregnancy leading to the deaths of the rest of the litter. Being the only son of a pack leader and his mate would seem like the perfect place to learn and to get to know the pack, which did occur, but there were other wolves in the pack who believed that Uyarak and Angerut were long overdue as leaders of the pack. Naturally the bullying came and at the important phase of self-discovery and confidence building so important in young wolves and it made Nilak's foundation of self shaky. Nilak found himself more and more wandering from the pack and the increasing ill will towards him and his parents and wandering the countryside, on more than two occasions nearly making his parents mobilize the pack in a search for him. Nilak didn't know it but one of these excursions would be the last he would see his pack and family again.
It was the night of a blizzard that Kremig, the foremost wolf leading the portion of the pack that wanted change, made his move. Nilak had wandered off earlier before the full force of the blizzard had hit their den, as the weather declined and the night dragged on Nilak's parents became more and more concerned. Finally, after having waited nervously for Nilak to return his parents announced that the pack would be needed to help find their son. Kremig used this opportunity to challenge Uyarak on the premise that Uyarak and Angerut were endangering the lives of the pack in the search for their son. Uyarak defeated Kremig but in a long and drawn out battle during which Angerut was injured while trying to escape to look for Nilak. Another wolf challenged Uyarak in Kremig's place and Uyarak realized he'd lost his pack, they were in a den full of usurpers waiting for their chance to ascend to the leader position. Uyarak and Angerut didn't live through the night.
Nilak, thankfully, never made it home to be murdered like his parents he had gotten himself well and truly lost in the thick of the blizzard and wandered far from his birthplace. Nilak was now a lone wolf cast adrift in the sea of life, wandering from place to place always hopeful that the next mountain or the next glacial formation would be familiar to him and he would see his parents again. Hope turned to disappointment, disappointment to anger, anger to depression, depression to mourning. Nilak understood that he may never return home.
