Ptarmigan is more mousey than she is beautiul, but she has her own mischievous attractiveness in the right eyes. For most of the year, Ptarmigan's coat is a deep and even shade of black with a silver-stippled nape and silver toes, and her acidic green eyes are a startling contrast. In the winter, many of the hairs on the lower half of her body are replaced with motley greys and silvers, so that only her ears, saddle, and tail remain completely dark. In this phase, she looks much older than she does any other time of the year.
