the only exception - Carolina - July 31, 2013

(Quick read-only.)

"Absolutely not." She growled with a flash of teeth, cutting Rainier off mid-sentence.

He was sold on the idea of joining Koontz, and had been trying to convince her for a week now that it was a "good idea". From what she understood of these Dragonwatchers, they were a bunch of ragtag do-goodies that had nothing better to do than group up and call themselves a pack. Carolina doubted they even had a plan in place should they fall short on food, or find themselves undefended from a raiding band.

But she understood Rainier's former commitment to his family. He'd been raised to have a strong moral compass, and just passing through without at least lending some help to Koontz was probably out of the question. And it was unfair to expect him to continue following her blindly without some give and take.

Carolina had turned away after putting a swift end to his third attempt of today alone to win her over. She swung her head around to glance over her shoulder, and the expression she caught on his face caused her chest to constrict. He, obviously, hurried to cover it up and returned her look with a blank one of his own, but the sadness in his usually bright eyes remained.

She held his gaze for a few long breaths before expelling the air in her lungs in one sigh. The tension in her stance melted and she padded over to where he was laying beside a thermal pool. Carolina looked down at him as he looked up at her, and bent her forehead to press it against his own. She felt guilty for putting him through all of this; he'd voluntarily come along, but he wasn't running from anything like she was.

She couldn't pin down all the reasons why she was sorry, but she hoped her gesture conveyed enough of them.
