Before it ends we should try to start - RIP Niamh - June 03, 2018

@Thirdeye

Niamh had left the pack before the sun had set, but at the time of day when the shadows were long and stretched like dark fingers across the plateau, pointing directly toward the east, as though to accuse the horizon of some wrongdoing. Those elk she and Screech had spooked- well, technically, Screech had spooked them, she'd simply had to run because the elk had chosen to chase her away too- had travelled from the plateau and on toward the forest, likely to seek shelter and protection from the wolves who had proved to be a nuisance. She was waiting; very, very soon the elk cows would drop their calves and then they would be vulnerable. She could hardly wait to sink her teeth into an unsuspecting calf.

She settled down on her haunches as the herd moved deeper into the forest than she was willing to go, and by now the sun had set though the sky was still relatively bright. She would remember where they had gone and possibly report to Quixote or Raven...No, she thought. The only wolf she knew she'd report to, if she was being honest with herself, was Towhee. Regardless of who she told, though, at least she knew where that particular herd of elk had gone, and she'd keep dogging them until the time was right.

it was not often than the avian concerned itself with the likes of the ground-folk, least of all the cervidae; occasionally it would observe them in the evenings but at that time they would be less than conversational, and there was no point in trying to communicate with something which communicated in bleats and grunts.

it was not yet high-dark; with its wings outstretched, it silently hovered on the summer updrafts, and it was during this aerial survey that the avian spied movement among the trees. it was uncertain, for the cervidae were on the move despite the darkness. curious of this, thirdeye angled himself towards one of the watchstations nearby and landed silently midway up a juniper tree.

Niamh stayed where she was, peering after the elk which she could just see in the distance. She counted them, and tried to pick out individuals so that she would be able to tell, the next time she saw a herd of elk, if they were the same ones. There were six females, and one of them in particular looked like she was very near the end of her pregnancy. If only she'd brought a few other wolves with her...The pregnant cow elk was so fat, surely she wouldn't have been able to run well...Maybe they could have taken her down. But as she watched, that particular cow elk seemed to prefer staying in the middle of the group. She would have been too hard to separate.

So silently the owl flew, that Niamh didn't hear it as he descended and landed upon a branch. Niamh's attention was fixated upon the elk, anyway, but she'd decided, by that point, that there wasn't much else she could do, but come back in a day or two and see where they'd gone- and if the cow elk had begun to drop their calves. Deciding to leave them be, at least for the night, she picked herself up and began to walk back in the direction of her pack- oblivious to the fact that she was being watched.
