keep this fire burning brighter - Lyra - June 29, 2018

CALLING SIBS @Arcturus @Yama @Revui (didn't forget you Yami I just know you're away for a bit <3)

If she wasn't patrolling with her sisters or tending to her herb cache, Lyra was often loitering by the rendezvous den, keeping an eye on her newest siblings. They seemed to be growing by the day — from small, dark balls of fur into creatures that somewhat resembled actual wolves. As much as she loved them, the girl found herself bored with the earlier stages of their lives. There had been so much crying and whimpering and...general uselessness. She wasn't sure how their mother did it.

But as they matured, her patience for them grew. They could speak words now. Kind of. They were getting there, at least.

The foggy morning had given way to a mild, overcast day which suited the Ostrega and her dark coat. She lounged in the grassy shade just out of sight of the den's entrance, neatly picking at a bone she clenched between her forepaws.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Revui (Ghost) - June 30, 2018

✴        The boy was larger, faster, better, but in some ways his growth was limited to his physicality and not his mental development; perhaps he was destined to be one of those wolves who never spoke, who communicated through more bestial efforts, but it would take some time before such habits would solidify. Unlike his siblings, Revui had remained a quiet creature. He lurked, only making a sound during play or when he was devouring his meals — while he should've been quite a chatterbox by now, he was anything but.

To say he was adventurous was an understatement as well. Despite his silence, he was a rambunctious child. He was far too rough with his siblings, and found that only Arcturus had the patience for him most of the time — but even that acceptance wore thin, sometimes. Revui had gotten a good look at the dark shape outside of the rendezvous, and he saw the bone catch the light as Lyra worked at it. Tired of harassing his siblings, Revui decided that he wanted the bone.

He wanted it really badly.

So, without any warning, he bolted straight for Lyra; the intent to leap over her lounging figure and snag that toy was clear, but the boy's body was far from developed for such a tactic. He exited the rendezvous and made to leap over her, but his oversized front paws caught upon her ribs, and the next thing anyone knew — Revui was going face-first over her back and flipping, crashing, sprawling across her, the wind more or less knocked out of his lungs.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Arcturus - June 30, 2018

arcturus stirred with a yawn, the morning still early. fog rolled outside, and he cast the dark shapes a fleeting glance before he rolled over. he had every intention of going back to sleep, but his plans were abruptly rerouted as revui tumbled over him and made for some destination outside of the stony den's mouth.

arcturus propped up to his limbs with another tired yawn, but dutifully followed his brother. he was still chasing the sleep out of his eyes with a series of hurried and unsatisfying yawns when he saw revui charge towards what he could only just make out as one of his older siblings.

there was very little time for arcturus to say or do anything, for in mere moments his steel-clad brother had lunged and then cartwheeled deservingly over lyra's prone form. arcturus couldn't even help it - he flippin' laughed at his brother's abrupt face-plant: "HAH!" he chortled, his hind end swaying and then collapsing as a fit of uncontrollable giggles overcame him.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Lyra - July 01, 2018

As if on cue, there was a sudden onslaught of puppies — no wait, a puppy, make that singular — most likely summoned by the scent of the bone wafting into the den. She wouldn't mind if her chew-toy was stolen, used to sharing things what with having two identical sisters. She would consider it a gift to the litter, and then go harass Hydra and Alya for another hunting trip. The addition of four hungry mouths (along with one of their best hunters being incapacitated for a time to tend to them) thankfully hadn't taken too much of a toll on their caches, but the eldest daughters knew better than to let them run low.

Lyra glanced up idly as she heard the rumbling of gigantic puppy paws thumping against the earth as one of her brothers rushed towards her. Revui, the one who she was sure had the lion's share of their mother's milk. Or maybe he ate one of his would-be siblings in the womb. In any case, he was a silver-haired monster...and was coming right at her!

The Ostrega barely had time to react before the boy crashed into her, though his aim wasn't quite there yet. She felt him topple over her shoulder and then back before plummeting into the ground on the other side. A loud HAH! followed, and Lyra glanced over at the den where Arcturus had emerged from, only to quickly succumb to laughter at his brother's expense. Assuming Revui was fine — puppies, she had learnt, were very squishy and durable — the girl quickly grabbed the bone between her teeth and leapt onto all fours, dancing away from her fallen brother with a teasing growl. Come get it!

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Revui (Ghost) - July 01, 2018

✴        He was flailing and kicking, trying to get back to his feet, and managed after a momentary befuddlement. The familiar sound of his brother's laughter caught in his too-big ears and they temporarily swivveled towards Arc, except the rest of Revui was still fixated on Lyra and the bone — so that's where he went, once he'd regained himself.

Althought he half-tripped as he peeled after her, nothing would stop him from obtaining that prize. Lyra's goading turned it in to some kind of game, but the boy was taking it quite seriously. He wanted that bone! It would be his! No matter how swift she was, how much bigger, how much better — if Revui was anything, he was tenacious and unyeilding. No doubt these were facets of his personality that would benefit him as an adult, things which the Cerberus would be eager to exploit.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Arcturus - July 02, 2018

the dark cub watched between bouts of quiet giggles -- when revui's ears temporarily swung his way he straightened up and presumed a look of innocence. as if to say who laughed? me? no, never! he blinked owlishly at revui, hoping this expression would convey his genuine innocence; and it might have, except revui had already turned his hungry stare back on their elder sibling.

lyra rose, shedding revui quickly and engaging in a few maneuvers of play. never one to be left out, arcturus rose and trotted clumsily after them. for now he watched, refereed, if you will -- shrill barks yapping from his mouth as he dodged back and forth between them.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Lyra - July 06, 2018

She appreciated the spark the newest litter seemed to possess. Instead of pouting and complaining, Revui took up her challenge, righting himself and coming after her like a train at full throttle. Lyra waved her tail playfully and side-stepped out of the way of his charge, oblivious to how seriously her little brother was taking her "game". She kept the bone just out of his reach, revelling in the sense of power she had over the younger wolves. No doubt they would overtake her in size in a few short months, so she made the most of the moment while she could.

In amongst the battle was a dark blur, and Lyra realised Arcturus had recovered from his fit of laughter and joined them, though he didn't seem to be on either of their sides. He darted in and out noisily, nearly tripping his sister up in his chaotic weaving. She stumbled and nearly dropped the bone to avoid stepping on her sable-furred brother, and she let out a soft growl before it quickly dissolved into a wicked grin. "Catch!" she cried as she tossed it towards him, curious to see how the boy would deal with his new gift and food-possessive brother.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Revui (Ghost) - July 13, 2018

✴        Lyra might've been bigger, faster, and older than the two boys, but nobody was as driven as Revui. He wouldn't relent, and even when he gasped for air and knew he should've slowed down or taken a break, he refused. He chased after the dark girl with the intent of taking that bone away — except then, in a spur of the moment toss, the bone was thrown at Arcturus. This changed the game slightly; it took a split second for Revui to realize Lyra didn't have the bone anymore, and another moment for him to change his trajectory, but once he was on the trail of his brother he was gunning for him, becoming a flurry of teeth and intent.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Arcturus - July 14, 2018

arcturus had been so busy yapping his head off he scarcely realized his sister had just tossed a bone his way -- and not figuratively either.

he froze, watching as the pale bone arced through the air, as if in slow motion; a slow turn of its ridges as if a planet revolving - his eyes gradually becoming wider the closer and closer it swung towards him.

and then -- BANG.

followed by CLATTER!

his eyes closed in pain as his body registered a split second later what had happened; the bone had bounced quite harshly off of his skull, and sunk to the ground with a series of tinny clatters. arcturus' head swam and he bobbed, eyes opening in time to see a second (and maybe a little more scary) object hurtling towards him like a furious grey meteor.

arcturus came to his senses, if a bit belatedly -- he swooped up the bone and turned away from his brother just as revui fell upon him, all force and teeth. with a Big Oof the boy was shoved forward, and he stumbled valiantly with his prize in tow. it was enough momentum for arcturus to catch his stride and gallop away, head absurdly craned to support the rather ungainly bone he carried.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Lyra - July 18, 2018

Had her heart remained as soft as it had been in her formative years, Lyra might have paused the game right then and there to tend to Arcturus after the bone hit him square in the skull. Circumstance had hardened the girl, however, and she knew pain was as much a part of life as play. The sooner the newest brood learnt that lesson, the better. Besides, her younger brother took it like a champ.

After her bone toss that Arc utterly failed to catch, Lyra glanced back to Revui to see what he would do about this newest turn of events. They locked eyes for a split second, and she raised a brow in amusement as she watched the cogs in his mind turning, and the realisation that the target had switched hands dawning upon him.

And he was off again not a moment later! However, the darker boy wasn't quite so quick, and was shoved forward from Revui's bulldozer charge. Lyra started forward, eager to not let her grey-clad brother have the satisfaction of claiming the bone that easily, but slowed as she realised Arc had this. Kind of. She watched with a mildly callous sort of glee as — with his head pulled awkwardly to one side by the weight of the bone — he toddled away from his sibling as fast as Lyra assumed he could (man, her little brothers were fat.)

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Revui (Ghost) - July 19, 2018

✴        Lyra had been bigger and stronger, faster, well trained. But as soon as the bone changed hands Revui adjusted the parameters of his play. He knew he could take his brother out and grab that bone — he'd spent much of their waking moments causing havoc for his favorite sibling and he knew the boy's limits — so without further consideration for anything, Revui was after him like a little silver bullet.

It might've been funny if he hadn't been so loud and obnoxious about it. Revui charged after his brother and the awkwardly-held bone, his paws like little thunder-spasms of sound, and as soon as he got close he began to bark, yip, and growl in his puppy voice as if that would get the point across: Let go, that's mine!!!!!!

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Arcturus - July 26, 2018

his charge was burdensome indeed, but arcturus did not dally. shouldering the bone like some mighty club he tottered on, pained only by his own ineptitude in wielding the thick bone. a few stumbles and bumbles, and he was off -- with lyra observing and a furiously hellish revui in tow.

there was no escaping the insistence in revui's voice, that high command -- yet arcturus was overtaken by some selfish instinct, and said no with a swing of his head away from revui, and the rest of his body following in a clumsy canter.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Lyra - August 11, 2018

It was an amusing scene — at least to Lyra. She was beginning to realise just how seriously her brothers were taking this; how the bone had become the sole focus of their attention and a prize neither seemed keen on giving up. Had they been any older and larger, the battle could have very well been to the death, but for the moment the eldest sibling was confident in her ability to keep both of her brothers safe from themselves.

Revui's thunderous war cries (which were really just shrill, irritating yips and growls), hustled Arc along, who was doing quite well hauling along an object that was nearly half his size. Yet for all of his Herculean effort, Lyra decided to side with to her grey-clad brother once more. She skipped ahead of them both, overtaking the darker boy before dipping into a play bow in front of him with her tail waving playfully in the air, blocking his path.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Revui (Ghost) - August 11, 2018

✴        He was furious when his calls went unheeded; that his brother would dare ignore his demands and claim the bone as his own — this was a most foul development! A betrayal! Utterly unacceptable.

His pursuit did not waver. Revui was ignorant to the onlooking sister for a few minutes as he barrelled after his littermate, and then when Lyra dove in front of Arcturus that was his chance. He slowed for a fraction of a second as he dug deep for more power, and launched himself straight at Arcturus — but he wasn't mindful of how strong he was already becoming and launched himself right over his brother with a gasp, and directly in to Lyra.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Arcturus - August 11, 2018

arcturus' burden was heavy, and his path unclear. doom was sure to befall him, be at the hand of revui's hellish indignation, or the betrayal of his older sibling. as he struggled he watched in a shade of despair to see lyra angle her way across his path, and wholly block his path. thus, arcturus was delivered to ruin -- at the very hands of his supposed kin.

rude.

he couldn't slow very gracefully, so he just ended up crashing into lyra as his brother sprung right over them in the most bewildering of maneuvers. arcturus oof'd loudly into lyra's pelt, the bone clattering at his feet.

in the mess of tangled limbs and slight disorientation, it took arcturus a fair amount of time to compose himself; plenty of time, in fact, for a dogged silver bullet of a brother (or the betrayer of a sister) to take off with their trinket if he (or she) so pleased.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Lyra - August 14, 2018

Lyra quickly realised her mistake as Arcturus showed no indication that he would (or even wanted) be able to stop in time, and so crashed right into the side of her face in an ungraceful show of force. She had turned her head just in time to avoid the brunt of the collision, but when she glanced back to her brother, another body suddenly hurled itself into her face again. She guessed that is what she got for putting herself into the path of not one but two clumsy — and solid — puppies.

She gave a grunt as Revui's fat self slammed into the space right between her eyes, before rearing to pull her head out of the mess of gangly legs and razor-sharp puppy teeth. The sound of the bone falling once again to the earth caused her ears to swivel; it was ripe for the taking while her brothers were busy untangling themselves. So with a toss of her head, Lyra once again made for it with a single, fluid movement, scooping the possession up in her jaws and leaping out of reach of her siblings.

There, she waved her tail and quirked her head to recapture their attention (if they didn't decide fighting amongst themselves would be superior activity). She had something to show them.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Revui (Ghost) - August 15, 2018

✴        The boy was dazed for only a few moments, but when he regained control of himself he was stuck between Arcturus and the ground and he did not like it. The bone was forgotten for the time being while his feral side took over; he did not like being on the ground like this, lorded over by his brother and by their older sister, even if it was a giant kerfuffle that nobody could control. His redirected attention was focused solely upon Arcturus. He grappled with his forelimbs, kicked and failed, snapped his puppy teeth, and otherwise occupied himself with overthrowing his brother.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Arcturus - August 15, 2018

dazed as the dark cub was, he did not miss the artful grab of the bone by his sister, nor the outrage of his penned brother beneath him. arcturus stumbled back, sitting down clumsily on his haunch -- and directly on his struggling, discomfited brother.

it took a moment for him to recognize the sharp sting of pain from revui's teeth, for he was recollecting his wits -- an arduous task, given the manner in which his wits had scattered and promptly left him. he yelped, shot up, and hollered in indignation -- the bone (and lyra, sorry buddy) were forgotten as he felt his brother's sharp reprisal. biting would not do.

with a gargoylish expression the soot-colored lamb morphed into an outraged lion: at tit for tat, gave revui hell in repayment in the form of contesting teeth and thick, annoyed growls.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Lyra - September 11, 2018

She waited expectantly at the tree line, tail flipping lazily side to side behind her as she held the bone in a slack jaw, awaiting her brothers to untangle themselves and follow her. Unfortunately, they took no notice of their elder sister. Instead, it seemed as if a brawl was much more fascinating. A look of utter disdain tinged with mild offence crossed her features for a moment. They're still young and stupid, she reminded herself haughtily. She had to give them time yet.

Arc looked as if he had — intentionally or not — pinned Revui beneath his rump. Only the grey cub was not having any of that and landed a swift bite upon his darker brother's hide in retaliation. This emitted a high-pitched yelp from Arcturus, and Lyra could only watch on helplessly as the two got caught up in their battle.

A grin reappeared upon her features as she realised she could now slip away unnoticed. A good life lesson for the boys; to not let your quarry escape when your attention was diverted by less important distractions. If they would actually learn anything from this she was doubtful, but at least she got to keep her bone. With practiced stealth, the girl slunk away from the area with all the silence of a shadow, disappearing from sight to leave her two brothers to tire themselves out.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Revui (Ghost) - September 11, 2018

✴       The boy let loose a roar fit for the king of all beasts, and snapped at whatever part of his brother he could find. His fervent attention was soon caught up solely with Arcturus; while he had not intended him real harm, the more his brother retaliated the more rough Revui got, up to the point where he could see nothing but the blackness of his sibling-turned-rival. He was unaware of their sister's dispersal from the scene. The battle would continue until the boys tired themselves out from all the flailing, rolling, biting, and pinning, until finally they were a muddied puddle of silver and black.

RE: keep this fire burning brighter - Arcturus - September 13, 2018

in life, there was order in all things: light, dark. quick, slow. skilled, unskilled.

arcturus fell in the latter category for each, and soon found himself outmatched. his brother, with the will of thousands, soon overpowered him -- as they bit and scurried, snarled and cried, it was arcturus who first drew a hasty retreat, repentant yips offered to surcease the wrath of the tyrant that pursued him.

lyra was forgotten, but the sting of his defeat was not -- as soon as he was able the boy slipped from the iron jaws of his brother, and made for the den to nurse his wounds.
