For the second time that day, the little red wolf woke up with a start. When she turned to look up at the skies, she saw that they were dark. It was still night, but the faint fingertips of morning reached out among the clouds, touching the skies with majestic purples and reds.

Yawning aloud, she picked herself up and was determined to continue her search when she realized where she was. This was no longer Rising Sun Valley but rather a different paradise altogether. The earth felt different here. Even the air had changed. Surveying the land, she could see pools of water shimmering with what little light reached the ground. There in between all the pools was a giant snake of a creek. It waters were like precious stones, and she found her dry mouth allured by the promise of relief.

Momentarily forgetting her search for the big, black wolf, she brought herself close to the edge and dipped her head in for a drink. Her coat gleamed a vibrant red, which seemed to upset the dominant silver in the area. She did not care. She wanted to be found.

RE: ruby in the rough - Jace - July 11, 2014

As usual for the dark boy, Jace traveled down the mountain in a lope, having refused to give up his morning runs even after they had relocated. It helped to calm the tempest of storms that often brewed behind his eyes, and in his heart. It was never quiet his heart or mind, and sometimes the roar grew until he could do nothing but run until he was so exhausted he fell to the ground in a dead sleep. Today was one of those days, having spent the night before holding the fire kissed ruby of a wolf, he knew only as imp had his soul in turmoil.

He had become fond of the imp after helping her to escape, though in the end, she had saved him much from himself, but she did not believe so. However, she was a member of his sworn enemy’s pack, and he didn’t know what to do about it. He couldn’t really go to Ferdie, as he would tell him to either forget about her, or get her to join the Sunspire, but he was almost certain that she wouldn’t join them, something kept her at the creek and he had no clue what. He would make a point to ask her when he saw her again.

He was running when a red gleam caught his eye, as the rising sun hit it. Turning his head he stopped in his tracks, to make sure that the diabolical fox had not come back to piss on their borders again, he really wasn’t itching for a fight today, but he would defend the borders if she did come. However, as usual when his thoughts turned to the Imp she always turned up, and there she was. He was starting to think the girl could read his mind and showed up to torture his mind, body and soul. Oh but it was a good slow burning torture that he couldn’t get enough of.

He shifted and loped towards her and skidded to a stop near her, making sure not to collide with her, he would have felt terrible. He rumbled at her in a low growl voice, Imp, how you doing today? Searching for something?

Lapping up the cool waters, she lifted her head much as a deer would when something dark streaked through her vision. Turning to see if it was him, she found her heart pound as she confirmed it was--and he was coming right towards her!

Flinching for what she believed to be imminent impact, she was relieved when no such thing happen. For a moment, she wanted to pounce on the wolf but realized that she was actually very, very upset with him. But she did not have the energy to play their typical games. She raised herself up and sat down and only barely managed to suppress a ferocious yawn. A small tear formed in the corner of her eye, which she brushed off with the tip of her bushy tail. "You know how I am and why I'm here," she said with a snap.

Immediately regretting this break in temper, she recomposed herself by sipping in a deep breath and exhaling with a sigh. "Big Black Wolf," she said, not willing to use the name she had already repeated to herself a thousand times, "Does it have to be like this? It feels like, like..." Her words left her, and she scrambled around in her mind trying to describe this feeling of wanting to be so close to someone, but knowing it would bring certain consequences and even death, but wanting it anyways. Wanting it so bad. "Like something bad." Her eloquent conclusion.

RE: ruby in the rough - Jace - July 11, 2014

Jace saw her lift her head and a small grin worked its way across his jaw. She looked like a deer about to be attacked by a predator and it made him want to laugh, because he was far from a predator to her. He would never hurt her if he could help it. Though as with all wolves that were near him, he ended up hurting them somehow, usually without meaning to.

He saw her flinch and realized that she had probably thought he was going to run her down, he supposed he was a great deal larger than her. If he had been her he would have flinched too. He saw a tear start to fall and he spoke What did I tell you about pretty faces and crying imp? He flinched as she snapped at him, curious as to what he did, but deciding that he really truly had no clue why she was there, not knowing what she thought of him truly, when one minute she was fighting mad at him. Mad enough to chew up iron and spit out nails in fact, and then the next snuggled next to him fast asleep. Speaking of which she had fit perfectly snuggled next to his side, but that was neither here nor there. He gave her an ornery, boyish, and crooked grin. Actually Imp I do know how you are. But I don’t know why you here, but I know why I would like you to be here. He felt like stepping forward and giving her a small brush of his nuzzle or a nudge, but realizing she was clearly irritated with him again he kept his touches and his movements to himself, he wasn’t very good at contact anyway.

Black ears tipped forward as she sighed and he felt bad, realizing that he was most of the reason for her current turmoil and he was unsure what to do about it. No he knew what he could do about it, tell her to never come around again, to leave him alone to go somewhere else. But like always he was selfish, a selfish man, and he couldn’t tell her that. It would be like ripping out his heart and throwing it at her feet, he had grown fond of the imp, and to willingly chase her away, was like having a crayfish stuck in his craw, it sucked.

Jace Imp m’names Jace. he chuckled at her then, but his smile was fast wiped off his face at her next words and he shifted from foot to foot unsure what to say or what to do, but realizing he had to be honest and let her choose what she wanted. That’s because it is something bad Imp. Not to you and I, but to our respective packs it is. We both could be easily ostracized for this, whatever this is. And imp I honestly don’t know what to tell you about it. Granted yes Fox does not care if you have friends of other packs as long as you meet them on neutral territory, but I honestly do not know if that is the same way she feels about me or not? He stepped a little closer then and sat to his haunches still head and shoulders above the petite sun kissed imp.

In that sense they were the same, hurting others when they did not intend to. The wounds the little red wolf tended to inflict were more inward than outward, however. If he and she were ever to find themselves in a physical altercation, it would be easy to wager who the winner would be. Even so, she would not go down without leaving a few deep wounds of her own; and if she were still alive, she would ensure that scabs were always picked, healing prevented.

The tear was merely from her yawning, but he attempted to comfort her all the same, and she felt a now familiar prickling of her heart. She did not know why these feelings were present, having never truly experienced them before, and she was not sure whether she liked them. His boyish grin was marred with something quite unpleasant, and it ended up making him look rather wicked. She wanted to laugh, for if there was anything she had not yet experienced from Jace, it was that he was an evil wolf. Yes, he always argued with her otherwise, but his actions told otherwise.

"...but I know why I would like you to be here." She did not understand these words, but that and the way he moved brought a chill up her spine all the same.

Not smiling as he once more said his name, she felt her uneasiness increase as his own facial expressions were almost frenetic in how often they changed. Maybe he was picking up on her own tendency to be emotional, though before meeting him she had not known this about herself. He spoke, and he spoke too much truth. The thought of being ostracized scared her, and she knew that her fiery sprite of an Alpha would not be slow in discipline. After all, she was still a nobody. She had moved up higher in the ranks but was in the lower tier and had not quite proved herself. Her attempts to collect game were earnest but weak, and a recent pack hunt had proved this as well. Moreover, she seemed to have more interactions with members of The Sunspire than she did her own pack, but this fact did not mystify her as it should have. As he sat down, she looked up at him and knew he was the reason.

She had never confronted Fox about her budding friendship with Jace and honestly was afraid to. Not saying anything for a long while, she felt the urge to rest her head upon his shoulder. But she resisted, somehow knowing it was inappropriate. More time passed until the silence almost seemed impenetrable.

"T-tell me to go away," she said, verbalizing what he had not had the heart to say aloud. "Tell me, tell me to never come back. Tell me I'm nothing but an acquaintance to you and that it's time for us to part ways." Once more, a tear formed at the corner of her eye, then another one, then another one, though this time they were not from fatigue. She allowed it to gloss her pale green eyes and stubbornly refused to bat them away, even at they began to sting.

RE: ruby in the rough - Jace - July 11, 2014

If it were to ever come down to a physical altercation, Jace would most likely swallow his pride and just walk away. The thought of hurting anyone, but especially the imp for no reason just about killed him.

Jace froze when she seemed confused by his words and he shifted his weight. He had not meant it to come out like that, he had not meant it in any sense except that he was glad she was there, and he had hoped she had been there to see him. Any other ideas were not in his mind, he did not think like that, would never think like that. Granted yes he found her pleasing to the eye, but he was not one to do anything about it. He was a monster yes, but he was not that type of monster and it made him ill that for a moment perhaps she had thought that, evident by the look on her face.

His father had told him once that he wore his emotions on his face, and that he needed to learn to school that. Unfortunately he never had, so his emotions were usually out there for the world to see. Granted he worked hard on not being that way, he worked very hard, but he made little to no progress. He was just an emotional man, though he tried to hide it behind a neutral façade. Simply because when he felt something, it was like a fire that burned so hot, it threatened to consume him from the inside out, the reason he had such a temper, and was prone to black out when his anger and his adrenaline were surging. One of the reasons he was no longer in the pack that the little red wolf was now a part of.

The silence that surrounded them made him want to run to the nearest tree and band his head against it. He usually didn’t mind silence, but this, this silence it hurt and he knew that when it ended it wasn’t going to be a good end. And he was right.

She broke the silence first and the words that left her tongue, she contradicted with her eyes, but he laughed darkly and humorlessly anyway, because he was uncomfortable and had no clue what to say. He stared at her with intense blue eyes, that were filled to the brim with stony irritation and angst. What did she want from him, he would join her if he could do whatever she wanted, but he was not welcome there, he wasn’t. He couldn’t fix that either, and he really didn’t want too. He liked where he was.

He spoke then quietly but tightly Pretty faces shouldn’t cry, it hurts those around them deep down. And Imp that’s something I can’t do. He looked at her and studied her, he could say them but they would mean nothing because they weren’t true, but he wasn’t about to keep her where she didn’t want to be. I’m an honest wolf Imp, it’s one of my many faults. So I can’t tell you that and mean it, but I’m not about to make you stay around me if you don’t want to be here, and I’m not about to keep you here when your heart lies at the creek. So you tell me Imp, You tell me to go away, that we are nothing more than a passing soul in a silent phase? Tell me and I’ll turn around and walk right back up that mountain and I’ll never look for you again.

Then he stood silent every muscle in his body protesting the stillness, and every single feeling in his soul screaming at him, but he wasn’t going to make her choose, he wasn’t. He was not that way and he would never be, and if he gave her more pain by being around than he did by being away he would give her up, to make her happy.

What she loved most about him was his laugh. Yes, she was captivated by the cold blueness of his eyes, but there was something about his laugh that soothed her. It wrapped her in a blue darkness and quieted the hot red noise in her heart--and more yet, forced her to think beyond herself.

Feeling her own facial features tigthen as he admonished her once more for crying, she stubbornly refused to bat away the tears that had begun to streak down her cheeks and collected on the tip of her chin. He once more proclaimed that he was an "honest wolf," but she could only shake her head at the deceit. Honest. Yes, he was saying what he frankly felt, but there was so much that he held back. She could feel it, an impenetrable wall forcing it way through the darkness. It separated her from him.

As she lost sight of him, he became more and more of a shadow. His last words seemed to her like a wisp, and in that same instant, it vanished. Choked out of existence. She rebelled against his so-called freedom. He was not being honest. This was not freedom. It was a shucking of responsibilities.

Pale green eyes now glossy but tearless, the little red wolf spoke: "You may be honest, but it means nothing when you don't do anything about it." If it would have been dishonest of him to tell her to go away, then he should have been honest and told her he wanted her to stay--and to keep her. Instead, he gave her some silly choice, as if it were a choice at all. For if he were not willing to pursue her, then what more was there to decide? She was not worthy enough of his pursuit and unwanted.

With an ugly frown that wrinkled her face, she suppressed it with a smile. "Go away. We are nothing more than shadows to each other. Never look for me. This 'pretty face' will never cry for you again." Even though she was no longer shouting, she felt her heart feeding on her bitterness, and she knew that it was wrong. But she could not help it, or so she believed, and so she continued to feed until she was gorged on this hatred

"Go!" she urged as tears once more threatened her eyes. She was also honest and would not break her promise to never show weakness to him again. But inside, she lied. Inside, she wept.

RE: ruby in the rough - Jace - July 14, 2014

My boy is shattered :( and I had a really good reply written and it got all deleted the first time i decided to try and answer an important thread with my phone and the last :( and by the way your awesome for giving me the chance to flesh his character so deeply :D

Jace saw her face tighten and he knew that he had said something wrong, but by the gods he didn't know what. The little imp drove him mad, and she painted him a saint or an angel and he wasn't, he was a devil deep inside. But he wasn't damned if the fates sent a little fiery angel to tempt him with her grace. She got him so twisted up inside that sometimes he didn't know what was up and what was down, and his mind was so confused that he felt like he was going nutz. He had only known her for a little while, but he was so invested that he couldn't get away.

He growled low down deep in frustration at her next words and he began to regurgitate every single feeling and thought she wanted him to do, even though it made him feel vulnerable. Imp What the hell do you want from me?!. How about the simple fact that I go down towards the creek almost every day, a place i might add they could easily jump and murder me, but i do it to look for you. Or how about when i don't know where you are it makes my chest hurt. Or how about the simple fact that I walk around most of the time in a constant daydream just waiting for the next time i get to see you. Or how about the fact that I don't know what's going on and it scares the shit out of me, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Or how about the fact that you make me laugh and carefree and I am better because of you. Or here's the kicker Imp every time you fucking walk away a little part of me dies each time. he stood there panting with his head down working hard to calm himself, but her next words froze his heart and shattered it all in one single friggin blow. His breath came out in a shuddering sound that was a cross between a whine/growl and a sob and he stood there for a moment collecting his fallen pieces while the absolute despair worked it's way around his heart and stayed there hardening it. He knew he should have just walked away from the beginning and now maybe he wouldn't be a broken man. He always kept his feelings stuffed down until they finally overtook him, but it was always too late every damn time.

Jace shook his head and looked right at her, the misery and wounded soul evident in his blue eyes, but he kept it tampered down. Alright Imp I'll go, but I do want to tell you if you need me don't even hesitate to call i'll be there in a heartbeat and if you ever change your mind, I'll be here. With that he turned his large black body back towards the sunspire and a quiet place to lay down and die a little or a lot, he wasn't sure yet, but he did know he needed ot go before his friggin heart burst the hell out of his chest and he saw it all cracked and shattered and bleeding. It was a physical ache this heartache, but he didn't know what else to do. He had told her everything except the fact that he was falling in love with her, but like usual Jace style it was too late.

RE: ruby in the rough - Leaf - July 15, 2014

Haha of course! I've been having a lot of fun with you.
But aw, that stinks, and yeah I know. Even I feel uncertain as to how things will progress from here. I'll archive this after a few days.

<style type="text/css">table.leaf {background: #ffffff url("http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/theder/leafdertable2_zps189be8bb.png") no-repeat top center;border:0px solid #41390b;}</style>

If the little red wolf had been more experienced, she might have been more aware of the games she was playing with the big, black wolf. But unfortunately, she felt blameless. Part of her realized that she was being rather influential--manipulative was a term she was not yet ready to admit--but part of her felt as if she were being logical and part of her felt so right. She was all parts, pieces if you will. Like a broken mirror that had never had a chance to pull itself together again. Forever fragmented.

If the little red wolf had been more patient, she might have entertained his tirade. Or even bothered to listen. But instead, it was lost in the heat of her own emotions. His anger both hurt her and gave her more energy to fight and to kick and to scream. However, it was his care for her that infuritated her the most. Not because she did not want him to care for her--oh, she wanted it, and so very, very badly--but because it reminded her of how great the distance was between them. It was a chasm that could not be crossed without some divine intervention.

If the little red wolf had been more brave, she would have embraced what she slowly began to realize sentence by sentence. He was falling in love with her. It was a strange thought, one she was unfamiliar with, and it scared her. Not knowing what to do, she could only maintain her vanity and pride. When he looked straight at her, she felt herself freeze, but her face also froze without changing into something softer, something more reflective of what she felt inside.

So he left without further complaint. His offer for further assistance lingered with her and surrounded her, threatening to suffocate her. Who knew that love could feel so much like death? "Don't leave me," she whispered, but it was far too soft for anybody but herself to hear. His big, black form eventually receded into the shadows of the mountain, and she was left alone. She had everything she had asked for and more, but never had she felt more dissatisfied.

The tears came easily once she had solitude, and they felt ran hot across her cheeks but became cool once they reached her chest and heart.
