The world around Goldfinch was a cacophony of change and uncertainty. Tired mothers fretted and fought, reluctant fathers came and went and came again, everyone thought only of the children, no one thought at all about the children, while in the quiet they grew wings, took flight, watched the little village burn in flickering patches below.Goldfinch's first steps were taken in darkness.
Perhaps her mother was asleep. She didn't know. All she knew was that she heard a sound beyond the den, something delicate and lilting, silverwoven. On fragile feet she followed, never once looking back.
