When the moment settles, Adeline forgets she isn’t home in Easthollow. Her father and Valette aren’t just a call’s reach away. They don’t seem to exist outside their little world on the cuesta and she’s comfortable, even in their softening laughter. He tries a second time to get her to dance and her chuckles lift the air again and she rolls over, swatting at his face with her feet before she groans and slowly picks herself up to her feet.

“All right old man,” she says with a sly grin on her face. Her rump wags back and forth, counteracting her tail, and as she lifts her front feet to try the dance again, she gives him one final wink. Then, with everything she has, runs away from him.
