"I don't mind long stories," she responded amiably. "Coast. We lived on these plains that ended in cliffs, that dropped into the sea." Her mouth screwed up as she remembered the last time she had encountered said cliffs. "My father fell one day, got knocked out by the rocks below and drowned. We found him washed up on the beach a couple days later."

Miyako paused, glancing at Varick with a sheepish expression. "Sorry. I know that's probably over-sharing. I just haven't talked about it with anyone, or really had time to process it. Things sorta went to shit shortly after that."

With that, she resolved to shut up and hear her newfound companion out. "I've been talking a lot," she apologized. "What's your story?"
