In the same instant she looked up, Howl paused in his forward movement. Steph mimicked him, instinctively knowing that if she moved, she might scare off whatever he had seen. Slowly, her gaze followed his, and she saw the two potential meals hopping around. She kept Howl in her view, and didn't miss his indication to make her move. 

Steph watched them for a few moments, trying to anticipate their next movement. They seemed random, as if the hares didn't know where they were going next. But, more importantly, they were at least sticking to one small area. Steph stepped forward slowly whenever their heads were down or turned, and when she got close enough, she lurched towards the one closest to her. They both fled, but Steph stuck with her choice, zigging and zagging after it did. She opened her jaws and just before she was about to shut them closed on the chunk of meat, it disappeared into a hole. Steph was surprised and reactively tried to stick her head in the hole after it. Her momentum kept her body going, however, and it flew over her head and landed with a thud on the other side of the hole. She yelped in surprise, but righted herself quickly when she realized she was okay. She looked to Howl to see how he had fared.
