Evening’s wispy form was coming towards the porcupine from the opposite direction — that is, she and the porcupine were heading towards each other. She could smell it ahead, but she was more distracted by the scent of coyote. She had slowed her steps upon noticing the canine smell, unsure if she should continue on this particular path. She had never actually encountered a coyote before, though in her few months of wandering, she had caught the faint scent of a few here and there. She had smelled many more wolves than coyotes, though, and she was now surprised that a coyote would even be here, in this land that was so overwhelmingly smelled of wolves. 

Evening did not know how to feel about coyotes. She supposed, with a bit of surprise, that she had more in common with them than with her fellow wolves, especially since running away. She dined mostly on rabbits (or rats or mice or lizards or snakes if that was all she could find), and she avoided most contact with wolves. And she was different, and looked down upon, the way some wolves looked down upon coyotes. Maybe I should keep going towards the coyote, she thought to herself. Maybe we could be friends, understand our similarities and our differences. With a bit of hope in her chest, she continued forward, unknowingly trapping the porcupine between herself and the coyote.

However, the porcupine, it seemed, had finally grown fed up with the wolves who seemed to be chasing it everywhere. Its quills rose in defense and anger and suddenly it charged Evening! She hadn't even realized how close she was to it, so lost in thought she had been. She let out a yelp when she saw it running at her, bristling from top to bottom. She certainly did not want a face full of quills, and so she turned and fled into the trees, all thoughts of meeting the coyote gone from her mind.
