He wasn't actually old enough to be wandering outside the territory by himself— not that he cared, really. The rules had never seemed very solid to him, as he had never been much of a troublemaker; why bother with it if it had never been relevant? River wasn't necessarily oblivious to the trouble he could get in. He just sort of figured he was cute enough to get out of it.

The forest he had stepped into might not have been anything special, but to him, it was the best thing ever. He took off running through the trees, tail waving joyfully— in that moment, he was certain nothing could make him regret this decision.

Winterbourne's voice is low and raspy due to a throat injury during his childhood, and it can sometimes be difficult to understand him.
