The pups were far too young and small—especially Relonikiv the Runt—to greet the new faces that arrived in the den. At first, Relonikiv didn't have the faintest clue they were there at all. Eventually, his tiny button of a nose picked up on their scents but concepts like numbers and others were still beyond him. Nonetheless, his small, puckered face crinkled into a smile as the sheer newness of everything inundated him.

Forgetting his mother's toe, Relonikiv squirmed into the crook of Paarthurnax's foreleg, unaware that not only his mother but his father and a few others watched him now, likely oohing and aahing over he and his brothers and sister. He unwittingly presented them with his rump as he wedged himself beneath his mother's sloping breastbone and, in doing so, made a happy, accidental discovery: his dam's foremost teat.

Instinctively, he opened his mouth and latched onto it. He drank some more, gluttonous despite his size, or perhaps because of it. Relonikiv did not let go until a rather watery burp forced the nipple from his mouth. Milk bubbles clung to his lip and a bit of the thin white liquid dribbled down his chin. Naturally, the tiny boy smiled through it all and even offered up a few happy squeaks.
