All Welcome
Life was chugging along in the caldera, the ranks expanding and the pups growing. Peregrine split his time between business (patrolling, hunting, lording it over everyone) and pleasure (hangin' with the fam, bangin' Fox, lording it over everyone). It was only midsummer but he could already sense fall in the breezes that swept through the wilds. Soon they would have to begin locking down for the winter.

Deciding it was never too early to begin padding the caches—and realizing it was high time to start including the Firebirds and their recent foster on actual hunts—the Alpha male stood at the foot of the caldera and called for the older batch of pups to come to him. He then stood and waited. It wasn't long before Gannet showed up, soon after followed by Ferret. The Alpha greeted them by headbutting them each in turn, then stood and waited a few more minutes to see if @Whip and @Jackrabbit would turn up too.

Since Peter's death, Whip had retreated fully into himself -- and after speaking with Elwood to address the confusion Eljay had cause, the boy finally knew his brother was gone for good. Whip was bereaved. He kept to the fringes of life in the pack and his demeanor grew even colder. He spoke to few, usually only the brothers he had left. Those who weren't in the nuclear familiar group (and the Blackthorns... of course), were cut right out.

When his father called, Whip answered. However, he was the last to arrived. While his brothers happily head butted their father, Whip remained still and stoic a few meters away, unsure that he could even feel that type of warmth anymore.

ooc: Just 'cause Shrike needs more threads with the pupperlings :)

Having been on the trail of a porcupine for about ten minutes, Shrike was pleasantly surprised to find a distracting call was raised by Peregrine not terribly far away. He lifted his head and listened in on the call, only to realize that though Peregrine was calling mainly for the pups, he must have been along the borders and would therefore inevitably be in Shrike's path. While he didn't particularly like the idea of getting chewed on even more by Ferret, who had taken a liking to ambushing him whenever possible, he figured there was no reason to abandon his fruitless search for the porcupine and see if Peregrine needed any help or wanted any adult company. He flinched when a few nettles fell down across his shoulders, and looked up to see that the porcupine he'd been tailing had already scaled a tree. He growled at it softly and pointlessly, before he urinated on the tree's trunk to mark it and express a bit of contempt for the prickly creature before he picked up a bouncy trot and made his way toward Peregrine.

Three of the pups were already present, and with a pang he remembered that Peter wouldn't be showing up. He was vaguely aware that there was another youngster in the pack, one that had been taken in by the alpha pair, though he'd yet to get to know the new boy. He dipped his head in a greeting to Peregrine but had to yank it back up again as Ferret took that moment to make a grab at one of Shrike's silver ears. He chuffed, clicked his teeth together close to the boy's cheek and gave a soft woof to both Whip and Gannet in greeting before he turned his attention to Peregrine. "Know I ain't what you called for," He said, purposefully ignoring Ferret who he assumed would make some sort of jeer, "But was in the area anyway. Thought to stop by."

And that first kiss coming, let's just freeze the frame

After a few more minutes, a decidedly lackadaisical and aloof Whip joined them. Peregrine eyed Nightjar's doppelgänger and bit back a sigh. All of the boys had taken Peter's death hard, their reactions varying in tone and intensity. Of the three, Whip had withdrawn the most. Not for the first or last time, the Alpha wondered if the little boy's passing had permanently damaged the remaining Firebirds. He had once suspected that they would bounce back easily due to their young ages but, so far, he had been wrong about that.

But maybe something new would perk up Whip and the others. "Where's Jack?" he wondered to no one in particular before his jade gaze focused on Whip as he added, "I'm taking you all hunting. But," he added emphatically, dead-eyed gaze swinging to Ferret now, "only if you promise to behave and obey my every command. If you dick around, you can get hurt or killed. I'm not messing around here," he added, gaze lingering heavily on the bandit's face before he eyed the other two.

Before the Firebirds could agree to their father's terms, Shrike loped onto the scene. Although surprised, Peregrine lifted his head and tail, the latter of which wagged amiably. "We're going on our first hunt," he informed the Gamma. "You're welcome to join us. I could probably use the help wrangling these little assholes," he said, shooting Ferret a playful glare even though his tone was actually quite thick with affection for his boys.

Had Whip not bought a one way ticked down emotionally damaged lane, perhaps he would have been as excited as his siblings for their first hunt. Such a thing was mile-stone in a young boy's life. It was a right of passage, but Whip -- he couldn't care less. With each passing day, his apathy grew, leaving the boy a hollow shell. "Okay," the boy muttered to his father, lacking the childlike enthusiasm of his brothers.

At least this was strictly a family affair...

As Shrike approached, he greated Whip amicably with a woof. The boy did not respond, nor did he even look in the gamma's direction. He was not family (despite actually being a relative). At least in Whip's eyes, he was not to be trusted. It had been a wolf from outside the family to kill Peter -- a wolf like Shrike. Whip, however, hid his mistrust well. He simply stared at his paws and waited for his dad to lead on.

Since this never really got off the ground, I thought I'd just fade it for us!

Still a bit disappointed by Jack's failure to appear, Peregrine decided not to let it waylay their endeavor. "We'll just pretend Shrike is Jack," he joked, winking at the Gamma as he tried to lift the mood. The boys seemed interested but a lot less enthusiastic than he had hoped. "C'mon, guys. We get to kill stuff and eat it. There's no better pastime."

The Alpha smiled at the group, then turned and began loping in the direction of Haunted Wood. There was plenty of prey to choose from there. And he would not rest or turn back until he, Shrike and the Firebirds managed to execute some good old-fashioned kill-some-stuff therapy.
