A brief, yet sharp pang of guilt flared in his chest for what he had done to her -- but the cardinal shoved it away before it had time to manifest proper. This was the Lord's will. He would not falter. He would comply.

"You need your rest," he said before setting his teeth to work against her pelt, grooming her to give whatever comfort he could provide.
