All Welcome

Most days have become a blur. It hasn’t been that long since she left the cuesta and what little family she had left. Her mind often wanders to Easthollow and what is left for her there but she finds little to actually take her back. She cares about Valette and Sunny and a few others but they are not her family. Not like Steady. Not like Grayday.

The ground is warm and the field is bloom and lush with the spring’s fortune. It varies in colors and a gentle breeze disrupts the smooth sea of flowers. It is minute but she feels something within her chest. There’s a calm she takes on as she lets her limbs lower, setting her body to the ground to rest beneath the sweet fragrance and the promise of summer. Her tail thumps against the earth as she finds a position comfortable to bask and absorb what she can of a good day.

she has decided that time away from the territory is needed, and needed sorely. she had not been out in a while, too caught up in the pack, and the lunatic that roamed their borders, and the many other things that shrieked for the girl's attention. but now, wandering farther and farther, the soft joy that came with wandering filled the girl as her thoughts churned and she struggled with various emotions.

the meadow she stumbled into was lit by a sunny warmth, the light dancing atop spring's bounty, clusters of wildflowers and new growth, saplings and herbs. she breathed in the scent of a thousand things that grew and danced and thrived in the warmth of spring, along with- the scent of Adeline.

her gaze immediately searched the clearing, and soon landed on the form of the older girl. she picks her way through the flowers, calling out a joyful, "Adeline!"  but moments after does she realize the potential awkwardness of this encounter, and the fact that Grayday had dumped on her a few days ago a huge amount of information about him and Adeline, which led her feeling that she knew far too much. she paused a short distance away, waiting to see how her presence would be recieved.

Adeline moves this way and that on the ground, rubbing her nose through the underbrush. The smell keeps her mood elevated and she’s able to forget she’s got problems at all, even for a little while. Everything feels lighter in that moment and the sun heating her pelt warms her all the way through. A few sneezes force from her nose every so often but it isn’t enough to keep from enjoying herself.

Until the shrill of her name brings everything to a halt.

The sky becomes grayer and the colors fade. Adeline can’t smell the flowers as the world rushes back upon her at once. All she knows is the sound of the voice, but not whom it has come from. Her brain latches on to the familiarity rather than the owner until she peers up to see Dawn running in her direction. Part of her eases up while relief flooding her that it is not Grayday across the way, but she lowers her head a little and sheepishly wags her tail behind her. She takes a few ginger steps forward to greet the girl in return.

Adeline does not seem overly excited to see her, but that hardly dissuades the girl. she moves to meet Adeline, halting a short distance from her and wagging her tail with a little nervousness. it suddenly feels wrong to know so much about Da and Adeline, as if she is suddenly intimate with Adeline, and she does not know it. Like she has in on a secret, one that shouldn't have been shared. she is suddenly nervous that she might tell Adeline that she knows, knows about things she shouldn't. pushing away the feeling, and a little nervous of might arise should Adeline realise all that Da's told her.

"Adeline! I missed you. I-"  she doesn't quite know what to say, harbouring the urge to tell Adeline what she has come to realise. How easy it would be to share this knowledge, knowledge that she is not quite comfortable with but has come to accept. but she feels that the mention of Da might drive their reunion into a darker place, and so she refrains.

When Dawn comes forward anyway, closing the distance between them, she’s still tense. She can see the shift in Dawn’s expression that sets her further on edge and her tail sweeps stiffly behind her, but hearing her voice causes some ease in her limbs. “Dawn,” she says softly, motherly. She’d watched the girl and her brother wake up many a morning between Easthollow and Morningside and now she’s getting bigger. Even since she’d left Morningside, she’d sprouted right up.

“I miss you, too,” she adds with a little strain to her voice. The girl doesn’t close the distance and Adeline doesn’t wait any longer, rushing to put her head around her neck and hold her close. Leaving Grayday behind meant leaving a lot more than she’d realized in the moment and if this is the last time she gets to see the girl for some time, she needs to soak up everything she can get.
