Ra had not been sleeping well. It was so very loud here, with the sea so close and the birds so happy - and while happy birdsong had never bothered the woman before, she found that it bothered her, now, in this strange place she was still learning to call home. She'd always slept during the day back on her mountain, but here, she was learning to take peace where she could find it, and here, the birds only began to quiet at night.

So she was awake, and she was grumpy, and the pitter-patter of little paws only set her teeth on edge. On her mountain, the children had known not to cross her path outside of lessons. The youngest of them, at least, seemed to avoid her like the plauge, and the older ones seemed to have made evading her into something of a game.

This child seemed unaware of her presence, which suited Raleigh, except that the woman disapproved of the child being both so far from her parents and so close to the borders (and, therefore, her person). Her job was to make sure nothing that shouldn't ever made it through this forest, this way or that. And this child certainly shouldn't be passing through.

Seeing the opportunity for some sport in this, Ra waited until the child was almost upon her before inserting herself into the red girl's path.

"Just what do you think you're doing out here?" she asked, her voice stern, but as non-threatening as she could make it. Most probably, there would be no need to menace at the girl in order to ellicit a proper reaction. Besides, Ra didn't want to overdo it, and have some mother complaining to her about being gentle with the children. As if I haven't had enough of that, she thought to herself.
