All Welcome
She’d been with @Dio when they picked up the scent of deer near the southern border of the redwood forest. It had been some time since a herd animal had passed through, especially so close to the coast. Small game and the water has kept them fed for a while, and the surprise of turkeys had given them several good days in a row and caches still filled. When the cliffs had taken a beating to the rain and ocean, their caches had gone to waste and building them back up as been one step at a time. A deer, her stomach decided, would give them an extra boost at recovery.

@Isengrim hovers behind the hedonakru and Thuringwethil pays him little attention. It is not often the two sole leaders of the pack travel away from the territory but there are enough hands on deck in that moment for her to investigate. Since the birth of their children, there has been little time they’ve spent together for the good of Drageda in the present rather than their future. Her stomach grumbles, distracting her from the thought, and she glances away to see a cluster of deer across the hilly terrain. Between the two of them, and the honon, Thuringwethil is sure they’ll be able to take down enough to bring back and excitement electrifying her feet to attention.

Thuringwethil remains silent as the size up what is before them. Saliva pools thick in her mouth and her tongue slips out, washing it away quickly in new anticipation.

In his recent weeks, he had been so bound to the claim itself that ranging beyond it--even just nearby like this pings as vaguely unusual until he shakes off the rust and gets into the groove of it. The prospect of their luck already tipping favorably today matched with a potential hunt does make it easy to get motivated, especially as the trail thickens and there is no mistaking they are on a good track.

When they finally can visualize their quarry, he glanced over his shoulder to the grayscale tagalong to feel him out (an unspoken question of potential and ability with it), then ahead once again to the real prize in the open landscapes ahead. The wocha could play these odds; potentially feeding so many mouths with a take-down like this was worth a chance.

He would like to get a little closer and observe them a little longer, but he didn't like the cost of too much time that implied--not with anticipation building fast. One in the middle kept catching his eye already, moving slower than its fellows. It was too early to get too attached, and he still skimmed the group as a whole only to be pinning his stare back on that one over again. Unless the others in their small party directed his attention elsewhere, that was where he hoped to find them all converge. Willingly, and once they were all most officially on the same page, he was prepared to take this to the next step: forward.

After discovering their find, and watching them for several minutes in minimal cover, Dio begins to step forward. His focus has refined onto one in the middle that has slowed down compared to the others, something she has also noted, and she glances to him for a brief moment to see if he’s ready. Not quite in position yet, Thuringwethil doesn’t make a move to go after them but she does put a little distance between her and her chieftain. A single glance to the honon behind her sends him in a wide girth opposite of them and luckily his silence keeps the herd from noticing them still.

Thuringwethil licks at her lips, her stomach roiling more out of excitement than need, and she waits patiently for the proper opening. One of the healthier appearing deer has deviated to the left for a fresh patch of sun-beaten grass that almost gives them an opening. Ears swivel forward in attention, head dropping to better center her gravity, and her eyes dart between their chosen prey, her servant, and Dio.

hehe jumping in :P

Shalon had traversed the land surrounding for several days. After escaping the island, she had tried to continue her journey. However once more she was distracted away from her unknown travels, the fresh scent of deer has brought her keen sense keenly in to focus, and her stomach growled with anticipation. Shalon wasn't confident that she could bring down an entire deer all on her own. But if she could seperate a mother from a young fawn then perhaps she would have a chance. She might as well try.

Shalon followed the scent the best she could, until she could finally catch a glance at the deer. She scaned the group throughly looking closely for weaknesses that might occur. She remained crouched, using her multi-hued coat as best she could, making it difficult for her to be spotted. She has the time to wait, to see if perhaps there is something she can do to help fill her stomach.

Others failed to capture his glance after more moments, and when an opportunity arrived, he now knew where his focus would be. But anxious anticipation aside, patience still remained key--especially when he knew his personal strengths in the hunt came behind powerful bursts of speed and force. He harbored no doubts about what the commander could deliver alongside him, but the servant.. less so. He knew not to rely heavily on such an unknown between relatively few wolves already, so when they struck, it would have to be well-executed and precise.

Since he wanted a different approach and vantage point, he began to fan away from Thuringwethil and Isengrim to move wider as they collectively prepared more with each breath. Soon, he hoped, they could descend on them and get their teeth on the slowest one. Waiting too long could only expose them, but again, there was a delicate balance at play.

In a second when he was debating on edging out even wider, he opted to go carefully still to watch the deer move. A little extra shuffling around on one side had caused a ripple among the nearby others. His ears were pressed forward and he was liking what he saw well enough to take the chance. After catching the commander's glance, he nodded--ready when they were to follow up wherever the speed of this situation would be.

Dio branches off in the opposite direction as she continues along with her own pace. She does not stagger or hesitate but she occasional flicks her gaze in his direction, making sure to keep at the same speed. She left Isengrim back where they started, leaving him to intercept the deer when they rush it forward. She finds a spot in the dip of a hill, crouched low so that she is not spied by the oncoming door. Dio on the other side indicates being ready and she shifts up onto all four, still crouched low and ready to charge forward the moment their game is in play.

Silver orbs scanned the deer before them, still oblivious of the other hunters in the area. Shalon had pinned her target, a young deer, although no longer spotted, still stuck to its mothers side. Her gaze didn't waver in the effort, she watched it move. Unknowing of the danger that lurcked. She crept forward slowly, although she wasn't muc of a stalker. Rather she preferred the endurance race.

A biological timer dinged in her head, and she sprang forward. Running straight for the mother and her fawn. Startling the herd, she pushed them toward the hidden hunters. Her tunnel vision narrowed on the young doe as it ran in fright alongside its mother, the race was on. Now it was a matter of who could out last the other.

With the motion of the herd, he had tucked in low and hopefully as hidden as he could make himself.. but now that good chances were falling into place, he began to creep closer again. Now knowing that the commander was ready too, he got up to prepare to engage.

Yet a half-step ahead of them, something else pressured the deer into flight and he doubted it was their doing already; they had not advanced that far quite yet. But now that things were moving in a direction they were not entirely in control of, there was even less time to waste.

He gave a short boof of a bark and now launched his assault in full before this could escalate further. From his direction, he aimed to intercept the one they had been eyeing still--and noticed the other wolf he did not recognize, nor anticipate, in the midst of it all pursuing a different prize: a young doe. A good pick, a wise one too.. but the one they found was more meat, greedily enough--although who was to say they could bring it down. He drove it to the fringe of the other deer, and it had panic in its eyes already.

Dio stayed on his course still trying to get close to their pick all while being interested in the other, her progress, and whether or not the commander knew of her.. and if he ought to adjust his route yet.

It seems they are not the only wolves to have eyes on the herd. The deer start running before they engage and Thuringwethil barely has time to acknowledge the straggle that has come out of seemingly nowhere. Why had the stranger not seen them? Why hadn’t they noticed the stranger? Her jaws tighten in frustration as her feet leave a thunderous roar on the ground in pursuit of the chosen deer. As long as she and Dio got to it first, they won’t have anything to worry about, but the threat of another hangs in the back of her mind.

Thuringwethil closes the distance between herself and the chosen kill but from the corner of her eyes she sees the familiar form of a loner she’d met a few weeks ago. She’d been going inland the last she’d spoken to her but why is she so close to her home? A growl rumbles in her throat and she turns her head for half a second and barks for Shalon to give up the kill she’s after and come with them over the bigger, meatier meal they have planned. Heda does not look back to see if she follows and refocuses on the task at hand, driving the deer closer to Dio.

Her eyes wavered for but a moment, yet the distraction was most fruitful. Silver orbs landed on another, a male in mid stride and two others close by. Ignoring the male, Shalon's almost continued on her plan before the sharp bark of a female turned her from her intended. Thuringwethil, Shalon identified, surprising herself. Interest peaked, Shalon abandonded the young doe, the stars had given the doe luck. She join the small hunting party, not knowing if it was a good idea. However Shalon wasn't one to reject an offer, especially one as salivating as this.

With quick paws Shalon endeavoured to catch up with Thuringwethil, her speed coming in handy. Her frame one of speed rather than brawn. Off to the fae's right Shalon drove the deer unknowingly toward their packmate in hiding.
