She had been settling in well. Her memories and sad thoughts were pushed aside with the prospect of exploring. She liked exploring. Mostly so she could find the best places to hunt (which was her main reason for it), though it was good to get an overall feel for the place. However, once she had finished exploring and instead simply hunted, there was plenty of time for the emotions to return and haunt her.

Knew. Oh, she missed him more than she could explain. He should be here, beside her, with his goofy grin and playful attitude. Pige. He had called her Pige. He was the only one able to call her that - and he would always be the only one to call her that. The former Ice Queen missed his voice, his face, his jokes, his everything. The way he smiled at her and hell, just how he looked at her. She missed it all, and longed for it back. If she could, she would turn back time, go through that happy time again. Replay it - keep it going. Gwen knew nothing lasted forever, though she had wanted that to last for as long as possible - but it had been taken from her. Snatched from beneath her paws like an owl stealing a mouse. It was gone.

But she would remember. The memory of him was held close to her heart. Perhaps she'd molded it to herself - made it a part of her that could not be removed. Would that mean she would never be able to let another love into her life? Maybe. She could not be certain. But she didn't want to love again - she did not trust such a game, not anymore. The ivory wolfess had had enough of that. Pain, all it brought in the end was pain. It had been worth it - but no more.

She lay under the shade of a large tree. She had finished hunting, for now, and instead had decided to rest and watch as the sun fell beyond the horizon. The sky turned from blue to orange - a fiery, bright orange. It was beautiful. Despite all the pain, all the heartache, all the fear and the anxiety, the sunset made her happy. A small, ghost of a smile danced across her lips, a pure one. It was faint, barely noticeable, but for once it was not forced.

With so much going on recently - the birth of his children, Sylvas's absence, all the trouble with Heartha - it wasn't surprising that Grayday had forgot about the new recruits for a bit. In particular, he was surprised one evening by an unfamiliar sight. A white shewolf was at the crest of the hill, under the shade of one of the cuesta's scant population of oaks. For a moment, his fur bristled - but then the wind shifted, the the male realized his mistake.

It was only Gwen. Truthfully, Grayday'd forgotten she was even in the pack. After he'd accepted her, there'd been so much going on - the short conversation they'd had was now almost completely pushed from his mind.

Guiltily, he set off in her direction, wanting to touch bases with the lonely woman before he forgot about her again. "Hey, Gwen," he called, slowing down the last several paces before settling himself beside her. "I haven't seen much of you - how're ya settlin' in?"

Her trance-like state was forced back, shattering into pieces like a broken mirror. She frowned for a moment, ears swiveling as she glanced back to see who it was that approached. Grayday. The ivory wolfess watched him come closer, and she said nothing for a moment, a neutral expression spread across her delicate features. "Hey," she replied, giving a small wag of her tail as he settled beside her. She could not say that she minded the company, however down she might feel.

Gwen hesitated for a moment, letting the question sit for a moment. How was she settling in? Not bad, she supposed, though she hadn't really met many of the residents here. "Well, I think, thank you." It was an answer she hoped would satisfy him. It wasn't like she was having a bad time here - no, not at all. The only problems were her own, troubled thoughts. But those couldn't be helped.

Grayday side-eyed the pale woman beside him, thinking that she still looked rather drawn. Slowly, their short conversation trickled back to him, and the male cleared his throat, not wanting to allow the dispassion in Gwen to linger unchecked.

"You're still feelin' lost, huh?" he said, the words a question but his tone a statement. He stole another glance in her direction, remembering his months of reclusive behavior at Silvertip. If someone had sat down with him and demanded that he talk, would things have been different?

(He thought of Adeline and was glad that no one had tried it.)

"I haven't seen you around much," he added. "Sunspot tells me you've been keepin' to yourself."

Gwen, too, was thinking back to their previous conversation. She felt as though she wanted to let it out, all of it, but she just... wasn't ready. Or was she? To be honest, the wolfess didn't know how she felt about it anymore. Just... empty. She was not emotionless, nor would she ever be, but she just felt so hollow. "I've felt lost for quite some time now." She responded simply, gaze returning to the burning sky as she spoke.

"Sorry... I get stuck in the past a lot. There's so much I just can't move on from, however much I try." Not a single word she spoke was a lie - this was the truth. Sad as it may seem, it was the reality of her situation. "I've been hunting, adding to the caches, and I've been patrolling the borders when I can - I'm not doing nothing." She was working actively, contributing where she could... just not socialising. Something just kept her away from others, like she didn't want to be near anyone. Maybe she had just lost faith in others. She had lost so much and so fast, perhaps she didn't think she could rely on anyone anymore. Maybe that was what kept her to herself.

Gwen sighed, lowering her head to rest it neatly on her snow-coloured paws. "I'm trying... It's just hard."

Day stepped closer, an serious but earnest expression on his face. "I'm not accusing you of anything," he assured, wanting to correct her misunderstanding. "I know how hard it can be to adjust to new faces and different territories, changing situations... I know what it's like to miss people, too."

He fell silent for a moment, wondering how much he wanted to share about his own past. In the end, he decided that he didn't need to talk about it unless she asked; he could get his point across without looking like a martyr. "I'm just worried about you, Gwen. The worst thing you can do right now is draw into yourself. Wolves aren't meant to be alone," he said firmly, shooting her another serious look. "I'm glad to hear that you're trying - that's all I can ask of you."

"Is there anything I can do?"
