Drogon has long since disappeared and Sunspot never returned. She’d traveled from one territory to the next trying to find something familiar to her, to find the scent the other woman left behind, but she constantly comes up emptyhanded. Sunspot had boasted how good of a tracker she’d been and she had no reason to doubt her, leaving her to believe she hadn’t want to return at all.

It’s fine, she tells herself. Even the voice inside her head cracks with ache.

On Nova Peak, they had one or two good meals to keep them satisfied but the less she saw of the boy, the less her meals became. And their size dropped significantly while the work she had to put in to find them increased just as much. Rabbits outran her and squirrels rushed to their homes in the trees. Anytime she crossed paths with anything remotely bigger such as a badger or groundhog, even a thinned out doe, Cascada turned the other way. She’d lost her strength and stamina long ago and is left wandering aimlessly until luck temporarily crosses her paths.

She does not realize where she is until it is too late. The stale scent left behind by wolves with no intentions of returning had not stopped her and she rewinds back her most recent memories to find another sign. Once bright green eyes widen while uncertainty filling every nook and cranny of her mind while she runs through a sudden burst of memories she’s tried so hard to suppress. It hadn’t been that long ago since she’d left the cuesta but it feels like a lifetime with every adventure at every turn she made. Carefully, Cascada picks up her feet to move as the realization sinks in. Subconsciously returning to the place leaves her with more questions than she had coming in but when she realizes the vacancy, the absence of the Morningside wolves, she realizes her old life is just as lost to her as those that once resided here.

It feels wrong to stand among what has fallen, unable to trace any scent anywhere—is that even what she really wants?—and so her aimless wandering continues, looking at spots here and there that tickle the faintest of memories. Only when she reaches the other side of the cuesta does it really hit her. The small stream she’d found Grayday bathing in and where they’d chased each other. Her eyes flutter back, struggling to keep the pain behind her eyes exactly where it is but it isn’t until she steps into a clearing the instantly floods her mind. She is unable to fight back against it and every ounce of energy is used until there is simply nothing left. Her chest aches, making it difficult to breathe, and her body simply can’t handle anymore.

Cascada finds somewhere to rest her weary body, a bundle of skin and bones, as curls up tight against the base of a large, lone tree whose leaves dangle around her. The seclusion is welcome, keeping her hidden from those afar and, slowly, she closes her eyes with a long and weary sigh.
do you want to break me like you were fourteen
and someone dared you to break the law?
