All Welcome
It was snowing when he happened upon the basin. Or maybe it was more akin to a quarry, all sunken in with a smattering of trees to dot the now quiet view. The mountains that divided the wilderness from the hinterland were more pronounced, standing jagged and dark like monolithic beings. He had spent the better part of two days tracking south, hot on the heels of elk. Dirge hadn't wished to hunt them, but rather hoped multiple others would. But between the forests and stark plains and now the inclement weather, he had shelved that hope.

Instead what now lingered on his mind was more than just picking bones clean from a leftover hunt. It hadn't been his entire intention to venture back here; the hinterlands were ripe for exploration, there were advantages to be sought and adventure to be lived. It was somewhere near to here he thought he had found a piece to a curious and bitter puzzle. Ostrega. Here, of all places. And somewhere on one of those distant mountains was one. He remembered him well enough, and had scarcely the chance to tell his siblings of that discovery before they had decided to part ways.

And now, Dirge remained.

As a chilly gust of wind stirred the flurries wild, he found himself drawing his attention back to the questionably spiny terrain. There was considerable uncertainty that kept him, the neverending temptation of what would happen if he were to pull at the stray threads in a remarkable tapestry. The temptation that perhaps the greatest adventure did not lie in a remarkable vista or some other undiscovered, nondescript treasure. Those thoughts he huffed out into a great plume as though he could circumvent such a wonder. He deigned what kept him lingering was a combination of hunger and a budding loneliness; the former kept him from going in search of his sisters while the latter tied him down and put him through the same mindless interactions every so often.

His expression set stern, Dirge moved on with no destination in mind.

The mountains that Jude travelled over gave way to an odd collection of smaller mountains, and in the middle was a basin. It had begun to snow, and she was becoming chilled. The southern plains wolf was not used to such frigid temperatures, she wasn’t sure she liked it all too much. But at least she was surviving, so it wasn’t all bad. Knowing she would have to find somewhere to settle down for a bit, the golden warrior started down into the snowy basin, assuming down there somewhere there was some sort of cave or cozy spot, at least something a little warmer as opposed to the windy crest she stood on now.

When she reached near the bottom of the snowy basin, she saw a small speck of color in the distance. Another wolf she presumed. Normally she would’ve kept on moving, seeing as she was given her independence and was relishing in it. But not this time. This time she needed warmth, of any kind. A warm body to snuggle up with would do. Putting away her aggressive self, Jude put on her innocent friendly guise, as it was much easier to get in someone’s favor when you looked kind.

She trotted towards the other and let out a chuff, her tail swinging behind her in a relaxed manner.

He remained alone for what seemed the longest of times, reaching the bottom of the basin—or what could be considered the bottom—in his thoughts. By then he had turned away from the monolithic structures in the south, his golden gaze cast out over the broad lake that had yet to freeze. If not for the sway of wind and pelting of snow, Dirge pondered if it would have been still. Much of this place seemed still; with the winter, perhaps it was frozen in time.

A distant voice rang out to him then, rooting him firm in the moment as he turned to locate its source. The she-wolf was like him, hard to miss while draped in earthy colors head to toe. Not even the smattering of toussled snow on their coats would hide them here, out away from the sparse and twisted trees. He regarded her as he had all others: intrigued but with reservation, ever curious what it was that drew them altogether. He doubted the locale belonged to anyone in particular, new or old; he had been somewhat near to those places, innately aware of what could become of wayward and unwanted souls.

It was no matter—she was drawing close now.

His tail swung behind him, greeting enough for when he had nothing to comment on. Company would have been nice on a tranquil day, even if the wind had a bite to it. At least here, he hadn't needed to suss out such things.

The male greeted Jude with a friendly wag of his tail. The golden and bronze clad woman continued closer until she stood fairly close to the other. She was too confident to be wary, plus she saw no reason for the other to be aggressive as of now, unless he wanted a fight in the middle of this frigid bowl. She looked him up and down a few times, assessing him, then spoke. I don’t know bout you, but I’m trying to find somewhere warm to stay in this pisshole. You can come if you’d like, I’d like to be as warm as possible and you look like a fuzzy guy. She smiled, her voice smooth and calm as usual.

She drew in close enough to touch, or maybe just out of reach—he wasn't about to test it. Her assessment of him was as bold as the words that flew off her lips and unsurprisingly he received mixed signals. The closeness, the commentary... the colorful language selection... well, he wasn't a prude either but that was beside the point. She, whoever she was, struck him with an air of cockiness he hadn't expected. But maybe he should have from the way she had come up.

"You're not very good at this are you," he stated at first, testing the waters with equal parts of confidence and teasing tongue. "If you're going to proposition someone, offering them dinner first will get you farther." The faintest of smiles threatened to turn the corners of his lips but he refrained, instead forcing a smirk in her direction. It lingered what felt a beat too long for his liking, but even if it had ventured into the territory of a leer, at least it seemed half fair.

Unsurprisingly, his company decided that they were not interested and left much in the way she had arrived. For Dirge, this was a little surprising, but it was not the first time he had started off on the wrong foot and had been left to his own devices. In her wake, his eyes lingered over the monolithic mountains once again and deciding it was not a point of interest today, he headed north once again. How little he knew, his next venture would pinball him back towards the thread in the tapestry laid bare... and that he would begin to pull it.
