As he had surmised, crossing the mountain range had proved facile, the two burly grays moving through the crags like they owned the place. They were children of the north, after all, bred for the worst of times (thus relishing the best of times).

When they at last descended onto the flatlands, Shale departed from Murdock to do some solo hunting, stumbling upon a creek at last. He wondered if the fishing was good here; he could see silver shapes darting here and there beneath the surface. Perhaps he would try his luck at snagging a few of these creatures for Mur and him to snack on.

A dark forest lay ahead, deep and tall against the expanse of the prairie. Shale's nostrils flared, and he grimaced in disgust as he picked up the scent of death and decay from upwind. It must be coming from the woods, he thought, making a mental note to stay the hell away from that place.
