Despite Charon being one of the wolves Gannet had implicitly been avoiding, when his voice sounded, he found himself somewhat unbothered. It was too nice to be out. He hadn't seen him come, his eyes being somewhat closed, but now he turned to look at the alpha neutrally. A week ago his words would have hit home sharply; after his talk with Rannoch, however, he simply felt a sad sense of acceptance.
"There was a war," he said, then looked down. "I left. Wasn't there to help." In his mind, of course they wouldn't want him back. It didn't matter that he didn't know. He should have been there regardless. It still hurt, of course, that no one had come to check on him. But now that he had stopped expecting it, the disappointment was a bit less bitter. Somehow, he felt, no matter how Charon felt about him, he might understand this logic as well.
