All Welcome
set just outside the southwest border of BFW, near the weeping meadow

The sunlight was what woke her up. It came down in rays much thicker than the beams that reached the depths of the Woods, shimmering like a fine heat on her pelt, blending neatly into the snow around her. With a groggy groan, Maegi peeled her eyelids open with some effort, blinking in puzzlement, her mind a muddled fog.

Where was she? A momentary flash of panic gripped her, followed by instant relief as she caught sight of the dark trees just a couple minutes' walk away. So she hadn't gone too far, then. But what had happened? She had been lingering around the edges of the willow tree; had she gotten too close? Had she, in her poisoned stupor, wandered outside Blackfeather's borders?

But it didn't feel like the poison. That made her sick, retching and nauseous. Maegi was simply tired, her limbs feeling like stone, exhaustion tugging at her every move. Rising to her feet was a monumental challenge, but she eventually did so, though not with some stumbling around. And her head. . .oof! Her neck slipped down suddenly, as if anchored by some weight. . .wait. . .

Her neck itched something fierce, and she went to scratch it with a hind leg--and her paw hit something hard and cold.

The girl shrieked, backing away in instinctive terror. She shook her head, over and over and over and over and over and over--

"G-get off me! Get off me!" Maegi cried out, thinking some enemy had its jaws around her neck. But there was no wolf to be found, nor other creature, only the icy steel of this. . .thing. . .attached to her. Eyes flashing with fear, she stumbled clumsily forward, falling down with a muffled oomph. Her head swam, and her neck felt so heavy.

Trembling violently, Maegi dragged herself to the edge of the forest, hoping Kove or Vaati and not one of their enemies had heard her cries.

Her ears pressed forward, her heart pounded faster. The cries that came from just a sprint away from the forest sounded familiar. Nyx tugged herself upward and hurried her way to the borders. Mismatched eyes, seemingly calm from a distance, sought for the pale coat of the girl she had taken a liking to.

Luckily, Nyx didn't have to look for very long. The little heap of fur was there, trembling. Nyx looked around but there was no enemy in sight. Had they already left? Were they hidden? She rushed to Maegi's side, pressing her nose softly onto her. What has happened? She asked worriedly. Are you unharmed? It was then she took notice of the cold and foreign looking thing wrapped around the girl's neck. She sniffed at it, if Maegi had already pushed her away or made clear she didn't want her so close.

Maybe it was best that it was Nyx that came and not her teacher nor her brother; the latter, especially, would more admonish her for straying outside the border than comfort her, she thought. The young woman's soothing tone reached her ears, and despite her panic, her breathing grew a little steadier, though her heart still thudded wildly in her chest.

"Nyx," she gasped, shuddering with fear. Her head moved back and forth like a pendulum, hoping in vain she could shake the grasp from her neck. "Help m-me. Get it off me." Maegi's voice was a pitiful whimper, a far cry from her usual confident, if still childish, manner.

She cringed as the other wolf sniffed at. . .it. Recoiled at the quiet circular beast as her mother had recoiled upon seeing her slimy, just-born body--though she didn't know that.

Was this a curse from the gods? A punishment handed down for not following her brothers, not remaining loyal to the only family that had been there for her since the beginning? Was she to wear this yoke forever, a scornful reminder of her betrayal? It would hang from her skinny old neck one day, a symbol marking her for always as blood traitor.

With a whine, Maegi scratched at her neck once more, her tiny claws scraping so hard she tore her flesh, just above the right shoulder. Scarlet blood, stark white against her pelt, oozed down her leg, steaming in the snow.

There was a worthy expanse of land between the male and his apprentice. He had been present when the helicopter landed once again, had seen humans exit their great, noisy contraption; witnessing such a production, he’d kept away from their landing point, knowing that with humans there came more loud, and sometimes deadly, creations. He was no stranger to the two-legged beasts, having observed them countless times before during his youth, back when he was still traversing the north. Most kept away from him and his wolf brethren, whilst others he’d observed on several occasions interacting with distant relatives of his; they spoke a similar language, the words nearly identical to the Inuttut he knew, save for a few altered pronunciations and usages. Yet, whenever the wolves spoke in response, it was never their words that were understood, but the language of their bodies—and, at times, their souls. But in the world there existed, too, humans of opposite intentions. They were drawn to the wolves, not for the clarity that they stood to present, but to end their lives and steal the bodies away from their families—these creatures, awful and merciless, are the same he expected to encounter upon seeing the dark mass slicing through the sky overhead, for it was an entity of similar origins that he’d seen steal the lives of the innocent.

And this angered the aging wolf.

He’d taken off after the creature from the ground, head tilted up towards the sky so that he might track its every move—but the sky did not present as many hurdles as the earth, and the speed of man’s creation was something he could not match. Eventually, he lost sight of the enemy and slowed to a stop, sides heaving as he panted, the sound of the deadly bird soon fading from his ears.

When he’d caught his breath and steadied his heart, Kove turned and began the journey back to the forest, though he remained cautious of his surroundings, ears straining to catch the approach of his lost prey. So caught up in his endeavours, the Inuk had not noticed how the humans had deposited a body just outside his borders; he remained oblivious of their actions, up until he spotted the two girls in the distance, their voices barely reaching his ears—but he could see that something was not right. There was something wrong, something that did not belong, and so his pace increased, carrying him closer to the girls with the stench of the two-legged animals growing more intense with each step he took—and then he stopped before Maegi, whose coat reeked of the smell, coupled with the scent of blood. In a matter of seconds, the northerner was right next to her, looking the girl over for wounds, before his gaze settled on the rawness of her shoulder and then trailed up to the collar around her neck.

How curious it was to see that they had not harmed her, but simply marked her as one of their own.

“Do not scratch at it,” he ordered, nipping gently at her hind leg to emphasise the seriousness of his command. “Calm down. Are you alright?” Although she did not appear to be injured, and certainly not near death, he was concerned. But even through the concern in his eyes, one could tell with ease that he was, otherwise, entirely unaffected by the sight of her new accessory. In fact, he wasn’t the least bit shocked by it, a knowing glint simmering in his gaze.

Despite the princess' pleas and panic, the thing around her neck was too foreign for Nyx to figure out how it had to come off. It seemed sturdy, nothing like a plant or an animal, and strangely cold. She got sick to her stomach then, both because of the smell and the thought of where the thing might have come from. I can not. She answered truthfully. There was little she could do but provide some comfort.

Which was why she was glad to see her father join them and she stepped aside to let the pale male examine the small Maegi. Her brows knitted together in a worried frown. Do you recognize it? She asked softly.

"Kove," Maegi whimpered, flinching as he reprimanded her. The collar felt as if it were strangling her with every word she spoke. "What is this thing? Please, help me get it off." Her voice was at least calmer; it always grew so in the presence of her mentor. He brought the best out in her.

After all, the Dark Master didn't seem overly concerned--he looked more curious than anything, she thought. But something had attached itself to her, and she was just now beginning to catch the odor emanating from her sleep-ruffled pelt. . .thick and acrid, like nothing she'd ever smelled before.

This was the daedra's doing, she was sure of it. Angry at her for abandoning Ramsay and Euron. The three had been born together; they were meant to die together, too. They would die out in the wilderness, and she would die with this 'round her neck--and many years after, too. Just to see her suffer.

The girl become notably calmer, something that he was grateful for. A single ear turned towards his daughter, her own question heard, but he responded to neither of them. Carefully, he reached out towards the child’s neck, grasping gently at her newly acquired accessory. Several tugs without anything to show for the efforts made, made it clear that the collar was not going anywhere; he could not rid her of the device, thus he would have to teach her about it. Taking a step back, he looked towards Astrid and nodded. “I do,” he answered, at last, gaze returning to his apprentice. His expression was smoothed out, not a trace of worry to be found—he even offered her a smile, further demonstrating how they all need not worry.

“It will not come off,” he informed her, the words drawn out. “But it’s okay, it won’t hurt you.” He’d seen similar garments around the necks of dogs in the past, and never had they seemed to be hurt by the items—it was their way of being marked, he’d decided long ago, the dogs with their collars whilst the wolves had their pack scents. “It’s a collar. Humans—those creatures that took you—put them on the dogs of their packs,” he explained. “I don’t know why they’ve put one on you, but we will find a way to get it off eventually.” Maegi was one of his, not the human’s; he would not let them take her into their pack, no matter how badly they wanted her.

Feel free to skip Nyx if she isn't needed - she'll just be observing and listening <3

Nyx stood by and observed the strange thing. Humans? What was that? She had always known her father was an interesting man but had never thought he knew more than he sometimes let on. Apparently she was wrong. She looked at Maegi and the strange device, a collar, and saw not how it could hurt her. Was it very tight? She didn't dare prod her nose close to the thing so she'd never know.
