The mistress carried herself through the shadows, loneliness also dragging her down. But she didn't seek to escape; she was addicted to the sadness like some were to the seeds, a sense of duty in feeling alone. Disowned, hated, not really cared about was how she was and she loved and hated it. Every day she told herself that that would e different, but it didn't happen. The hole in her life, her arrogance and loved ones fled from it, felt better left unfilled.

A glimpse of Maegi, or so she thought, stopped her in her tracks, the foggy meadow not being able to cloud everything. A strange worry shot through her stomach, something a mother would feel for her babes, and she nosed the air. Maegi? She called perhaps softer than intended. She lingered just a bit closer, not wanting to get too close if it had just been a trick of the light.
