All Welcome
she paused once at the edge of the water, tail wrapped close around her haunches. it was here, many weeks ago, that she had seen the girl slide into the water before she herself had drifted far out of the wilds. her time alone had not been kind; her fur patchy and ragged, ribs protruding, and her distended belly stark against her thinness, a looming reminder of what she'd done. gaze fixed on the distant lump, wondering at whatever it was that had prompted the wolf to cross. her breath came fast, and fear tasted bitter on her tongue along with the brine she'd yet to get used to.

retreating, poppy slid back to a place safe from the waves from which to think. sliding neatly backward until she lay semi-awkwardly in the sand, chestnut gaze peered out over the sunlit waves. head stretched out on the sand, breath filled and then left her, ears flickering once before the woman fell still, wondering just how terribly her world had fallen to pieces.

The pale young Captain’s hunt for the missing Ava had led him out of the pack and onto the beach. He feared the thought of straying too far from the crew, knowing that they would fret if he was away for too long. Still, it had been some time since he had seen the aspiring healer; the thought that one had left his crew had left a burning in the pit of his belly. Smokestep lifted his head up and drew in the scents, lingering on the taste of brine and saline that filled his throat. He feared that he was dealing with a deserter, but hunted for her anyway; searching for answers. Pirate code dictated that if they were to ever abandon the life of a pirate, they were to be hunted and killed. He was not one to shun the idea; he did not think kindly of those who stepped out on a life they were intended to dedicate themselves to.

Trekking on long pale limbs, Smokestep pulled himself from the waves with a large fish clutched between his jaws. He wasn’t hungry, but looking for an excuse to be so far away from the bay. It was then that he noted an odd and small shape having emerged into the beach. His brows furrowed as he caught sight of her strange coloration and domestic features; the young Captain had never seen such a thing. Moving slowly toward her, trying not to spook the stranger, he noted the bulging of her ribs and the hunger that ate away at her like an illness. Knowing he didn’t need the fish, the pale young corsair tossed it in her direct – it landed roughly five yards from where she was – and he watched her with a wary eye.

in her time alone, she had adopted once more her wariness of wolves. the wild seemed so much wider and so much crueler out of Murdock's guiding shadow, and she no longer trusted her own thoughts; only basic instinct seemed most beneficial, seemed to increase her likelihood of survival. and so when the white one appeared, gaze gleaming like blood, she drew in on herself, tail raising stiffly and gaze following him. to flee back to the safety of the wood would to act as prey did.

the fish landed with a slap in the rocky surf near her, and the sound had her ears flick a moment before settling back on him. for a moment, she was caught in the midst of an internal argument, until hunger had her slip toward the generous meal despite the heavy feeling settled in her chest. solitude had not eroded her innate goodness entirely, and a soft thank you slipped from her jaws as she settled again near the meal, wanting most desperately to tear into it and yet drawing herself up to observe the stranger more readily.

The girl did not look as though she trusted him, or the food that he was offering. Smokestep didn’t blame her for feeling as though he could betray her. Still, he held his distance and made certain that he did not overstep his place. The young pirate wasn’t keen on frightening girls away; he did all that he could to keep them around. He was confident enough to believe that if he could win over Hex, he could easily win over this sad little stray with a few cheery words and a fresh meal. Then again, Smokestep believed that he was a gift to most and that his charm could persuade the ocean to part if he so wished it. It was the flaw of being young and so sure that he had found his calling.

“Ye alright, lass?” he inquired to her with a flash of concern on his features. The question did not seem as though he was hoping to pry, but simply to understand. Keen on keeping his distance until she made a move to close the space, Smokestep watched her from the corner of his eye and made sure that she wasn’t choking herself on the fresh meal. She was bedraggled enough to seem a little bent, but he couldn’t tell if the circumstances had come from the sea or from his own kind. Wolves were awful and nasty sometimes, and he was no stranger to the viciousness of his own kin.
