aw!

into the water she had gone again, and again, until erzulie had begun to understand there was not a way beneath heaven that she would ever become as experienced as wolves born to the sea. and so she had decided that was not a goal of hers — daily immersions in the brine hardened her muscle to its current and its cold.
the vigorous exercise left the harlot rather assailed by hunger; at dusk she found herself along the shoreline, following the clacking steps of a small crab.

Rescuing from page 2! :P

Godot had started to become aware that there was an actual cycle to the tides.  For quite a while she'd thought the whole thing was random nonsense, but considering how little time she had initially spent down by the shore in relation to the time she spent scuttling about in the forest section of the territory, perhaps it wasn't that surprising.  Then again, it wasn't like Godot was a particularly clever wolf to begin with.

Now knowing that there was a cycle to the tides didn't particularly mean she had any idea what that cycle was, or when it would be -- just that it happened, and for all she knew it was magic.  So, she tried going down to the beach at a different time of day in case it had tossed something else interesting up on the shore.  There wasn't much, but she did find a particularly long streamer of kelp which now waved along behind like a banner in the dying light as she ran along the shore.  This was a thing she wasn't going to keep, but it would entertain her for a time until something more interesting popped up.  Another wolf might do.  She didn't know who the other woman was other than someone she'd vaguely crossed paths with at the meeting -- Godot got an A+ in hermit skills -- but she did utter a muffled whuff as she came up behind her, curious what was going on.

thank you!

erzulie's cinnamon ears tipped backward at the crunch of paws in the sand, accompanied by a friendly enough sound; her muzzle swung toward the packmate with an affable light in her mintglow gaze. small and smoulder-eyed, cloaked in scarlet-limned nightfall, the girl was a vision. "hello," the harlot greeted with a small curve of her lips.
in the interim, the crab saw a chance to escape, and scuttled faster, but the swab swept down upon it, battling it catlike with one small spice-hued paw, this time in the direction of the newcomer. a chuckle escaped the woman; she wondered what the other would make of her antics.

Well, she wasn't being chased away, always a good sign.  Godot was trying to remember where she'd scented the woman around, but she couldn't remember anything distinct.  She'd been around a while, that's about as much background as could be discerned.  'Llooo, she said, doing her normal talking without dropping whatever she was carrying thing.  On the bright side, at least what she said wasn't completely incomprehensible and she wasn't usually the sort to blather on unprompted.  Instead, she'd just drag the kelp along until she was forced to put it down for one reason or another.

The crab, though, was a nice little distraction.  The motion of it skipping across the sand definitely drew Godot's attention, and she circled around it as it came to a stop and started to get its little pokey feet underneath it again to try to escape its torturer.  The problem with that?  Godot responded in kind -- after a quick glance up at the other woman to look for any hints, she made one almost-swipe which was met with the threat of claws.  She moved a bit farther around to the crab's side before smacking the creature back like some weird game of ping-pong, the kelp flapping as Godot moved.  The crab wasn't something that could be hidden away -- except in a cache -- so she wasn't going to trade her kelp for it.

erzulie was amused by how the other woman kept up with their game while refusing to relinquish her banner of kelp. opting not to comment on the seaplant, the harlot prodded the crab with another sharp brush of her paw. "i be erzulie," she purled; she had never seen a reason to hold back her name.
whether or not the other offered her own remained to be seen; the woman's jaws seemed quite occupied holding fast to the kelp. erzulie supposed it was rather salty; her own palate was not quite suited to such tastes, despite the fact she had chosen ironsea as her home. mintglow gaze eventually found the features of the other; she smiled and stepped aside, deciding to allow the little creature a pathway into flight if it so chose.

At this point Godot had probably picked up so many weird and seasalt-laden things that the kelp wasn't really too distracting.  It was odd, sure -- both in texture in taste -- but it was just a toy, not food, and not a particularly precious one at that.  Kelp would rot, and she wasn't really all that sure if it would be nearly as interesting if it dried out and didn't rot.  She circled around where the crab eventually skittered to a stop this time, eventually dropping the kelp so she'd be able to reply.  It sort of made a little wall to prevent escape away from the water (okay not really, it would be simple for the crustacean to climb over).

This Erzulie chick did kinda speak a little odd from her perspective, but then again, this was Godot, so her own internal weirdly-winding thoughts probably were far stranger in comparison to any accent.  Her view of the world was pretty restrained -- having always been pretty isolated from others, even within a pack, her words lacked a certain amount of emotional finesse,  Godot.  Or Adelaide sometimes.  She jabbed her nose in the direction of the crab, Those don't seem to get much bigger, right?  If there was some secret to turning a single snack into bigger food, she totally wanted to know.  They were at times a little too pointy for the effort.  Mega-sized ones probably be scary as all get-out if they were equally angry.

"godot or adelaide," erzulie murmured beyond the sweet blossom of a genuinely intrigued smile. two names, each unique in their own right. and youthful. the harlot hummed beneath her breath, narrowing her mismatched gae after the crab as if appraising its future size. "dey can be biggah," the woman rejoined finally, "but not much biggah." perhaps enough to injure a wolf with a well-placed snipe of sharp claws, but they were not sharks.
"be you intendin' to decorate wid de kelp?" erzulie inquired next, her tones light, teasing; she had no true interest in the prize godot-also-adelaide bore with her. as she waited for her companion's answer, the jezebel shifted on the sands until she faced the sea, and pleasure sparked in her breast at the mere sight of the great stretching brine.

Well at least someone had gone and paid a bit more attention to the rest of the things that lived along the shore.  Godot was very much an "only paying attention to the moment" kind of wolf, so hadn't really put two and two together in a lot of cases.  It had taken her a while to figure out there was even a pattern to tides, and probably hadn't entirely figured out the whole synced-to-the-moon part of it.  She just wasn't particularly clever.  Probably good.  If they were way bigger, they'd be dangerous maybe, instead of just obnoxious pinchy things.  Just the same, it'd be nice if they were meal instead of snack sized... There was a fine line there somewhere that would mark the best size for wolves.  If only reality would cooperate.

The kelp though?  She shrugged, Dunno. It was there, so brought it along.  Godot paused and looked down at it.  It had seemed like a good idea but now she didn't know.  It was a toy, one with a limited shelf life and now she was just reconsidering the whole thing.  I don't think it'll keep well.  But then again, you also couldn't really play with chips of sea glass.

erzulie smiled, tracing her gaze along the length of kelp. "perhaps if you were to soak it again in de brine," she suggested, motioning toward the sea's lapping. "as you know, dat plant be comin' from de sea; return it and see what happens." her tone was kind, warm with her own intrigue to know whether or not the kelp could be revived.
"how long have you been in ironsea, godot?" erzulie murmured after a beat, turning her attention back to the lovely-eyed girl. there was a boredom there she thought was visible; it became a sense of interest for her as she awaited the other's response.

If she put it into the sea, how would she stop it from floating away?  Yeah, sure, she couldn't tell the difference between two similarly-sized clumps of the stuff, but it was the principle of the thing.  Hm.  Maybe.  But that still means I can't store it with my other stuff.  I'd be better off just getting a new one.  Not like there's a shortage.  It was just dumb that plants had a habit of dying, and even if the kelp wasn't really a plant, it kind of did similarly.  She looked askance at the kelp again.  It had been fine, and still would be for another couple hours, but fun would fade.

She shrugged, Uhhh. I dunno.  How long's the pack been around?  'Bout that long.  I know you haven't been around as long, but I'm not good at time.  It passed, she didn't notice.  There were a lot of instances where it was really obvious that Godot lived inside her own head more than reality.  The fact that she'd been in the pack this long and still knew basically nobody was another clue of that.
