All Welcome
Before he even drew close, he knew something was off. When he stepped foot upon the grounds that had once been his home, he knew. They were gone. Had they been driven out? Killed by the conflict he had run away from? Towhee, once his best friend and closest confidant, was nowhere to be found. The caldera was empty, and Phox felt the same sensation as he twisted around his old stomping grounds, feeling gloomy and defeated.

If they had been here, he was not sure what he would have done. He had no excuse for why he had run. He had been scared, first and foremost. He was not cut out for fighting. He still wasn't. But he was older now. Perhaps a bit wiser. At the very least, he had learned more about his passions: hunting and the sky.

It was the witching hour, and he looked above him. The stars, at least, had not left him. And he could not run away from them no matter how hard he tried. He sighed, laying down at the former rendezvous site and rolling over to get a better view. Hercules was above, along with the bears. He knew Leo was hiding somewhere behind the western mountains, too.

The wood had proven to be a fruitful place filled with tall trees that stretched overhead and shaded the earth from all things hot and shining. Animals had scuttled about beneath the underbrush and the paths that stretched between the trunks of the great fixtures were astounding. Tadec had found his home; he had found the ideal place for a family – for a future – and he was not about to let it be released from his spirit yet. The halfling coywolf had ventured out and beyond the wild wood and into the stretch of open terrain that had led him to the caldera. There, he sniffed for signs of others and found only one that carried a strong enough aroma to be present; the thief sought them on long broomstick limbs.

When the rawboned creature had closed the space between himself and the other wolf, he noted the coloration from afar. The other male was painted in a handsome coat of charcoal with an accented white tip to his tail. The stars that glittered overhead made the other appear as though he had been collected from them and had plummeted to earth to land where he was. Tadec was enthralled. He moved on limber legs toward the other and when he had drawn near enough, he withdrew his breath at the sheer size of the other wolf. It appeared that the stranger was viewing his former home – the heavens – and had made a position of relaxation for himself there.

Tadec yipped a soft sound to signal his presence and the tip of his tail twittered in a feline manner. Small and slight in his build, the coywolf moved to a position where he could converse with this starfell creature.

Phox was a bit spooked by the approach of the other wolf, but he did his best to keep his composure. He had not expected to run into anybody else here now that his family had left. That was a silly notion, now that he thought about it, but he had never been a particularly bright wolf to begin with. He wondered if his mother and father would have approved of him, but that was a question he had asked himself since he learned of them, and it was impossible for him to know the answer. They had gone out of this world, and he had come into it.

He rolled over onto his side, then to his feet, and waved his tail. Perhaps he could turn over a new leaf. With the rest of his family gone (dead?), there wasn't anything tying him to the caldera. He looked the other wolf over, noting that he was smaller and more angular than most wolves Phox had met. He didn't make the connection that the sharper features were from the coyote in the strangers blood.

Considering the fellow had walked up to him, Phox allowed him to make the first move. He was equally ready to flee or make conversation.

The dark wolf stirred from his resting place, causing the coywolf to teeter where he stood on the length of his spindled limbs. Once the other had found his footing, he offered a gentle wavering of his tail that allowed for the halfling creature to feel moderately more at ease. His anxious trepidation seemed to linger in the air, but Tadec was willing to speak to this creature who looked like a great fox. The darkness of his coat was entrancing to the thief; he roamed the body of the other male with a sharp look before he dipped his muzzle and offered a shriveled smile on thin lips.

“Greetings, homba. Come to search… the stars?”

The accent on his tongue was thick. Hedgerow had never been a strong point of his ability to communicate with others. He often lacked the tact that many possessed, but he was capable of appearing kindly and genuine in his fumbled words. The other wolf had appeared to be waiting for some conversation to be stuck. Tadec found this a difficult task, but he opened up with what he could and retained the gentle smile on his narrow muzzle.

The wolf who spoke sounded... off, in some way. It wasn't how Towhee sounded different, or maybe Phox would have tried to motion using the same signs he'd helped Towhee come up with. Instead, he shrugged, a universal sign known to those who could and those who could not hear.

"The stars are always there," he replied. "The trick is figuring out what they mean."

Okay, so that was a bit cryptic. Nevertheless, Phox had used them to navigate himself both in and outside of the Teekon Wilds, and with the knowledge he had learned while away, he was pretty sure other things could be gleaned from the stars as well.

"You from around here?" he asked.

He knew full well that this particular wolf hadn't been born here, but there was certainly the chance he had come from nearby.

The dark male seemed quite lax in his body language and responses. It was enough to put the moonlighter at ease for a short while. The tension in his shoulders dropped, though he maintained eye contact with the fox-like man. It seemed as though they shared a common ground in the expanse of sky that stretched overhead. While Tadec was not fully fluent in Hedgerow, he could make out enough of what Phox had said to muddle through the conversation without causing great offense to the other. As though he sought the same answers, the spindly crow cast his bronze gaze toward the heavens. A gentle sigh escaped his dark and leathery lips.

A question was cast to him. Tadec pulled his sights from the nebula above and returned it to the other male with curiosity. He was not certain how to respond to the inquiry to provide accurate details for what had been asked. There was a passage that took place at his narrow limbs, like a horse ready for show. ”Tadec is not from here. Tadec lives near. This one was searching for new home to claim for family,” he offered with a shriveled smile. Then, the dark coywolf canted his head just slightly to the left and his gaze glimmered at the fox-like creature before him. ”Your home?” he then returned. The tone behind the words was laced with a genuine interest.

Tadec this, Tadec that, and then asking about his home. Phox was a bit confused as to why this wolf was talking about somebody else, seeing as he'd never heard anybody talk about themselves in the third person. The Redhawk thought it was a strange way to evade a direct question, but what did he know? Maybe this wolf didn't want to talk about himself and worshipped this other Tadec fella. Phox nodded dumbly to the Tadec talk, then shook his head at the question.

"It used to be," he replied, the left corner of his mouth turning down a bit to indicate his displeasure in admitting even that much. "I don't live here anymore, though. I don't think anybody does."

"Who's this Tadec fella you're talking about?" he asked, not willing to let something go when it just didn't add up.
