@Tahani or @Relmyna, roughly a little more than two weeks after birth? :)

There is not much yet to her world. She eats and sleeps. Sleeps and eats. She’s bathed every so often but overall, little attention is paid to her. The young child can’t get far on legs that she barely has control of but each day offers a little more stability, sight a little clearer, and hearing just a little sharper. The young child knows nothing different than the open world around her, instead of a den to keep her protected and warm, and does not expect it to be any different day in and day out. She keeps close to the one that keeps her and keeps her warm but she’s left discarded most of the time, as if no one quite knows what to do with her.

Of course, young Currituck does not know any better. As long as she’s fed and warm most of the time, she doesn’t complain too much, but most of her cries are met with deaf ears and she’s left ignored.

Today, she finds an illuminated piece of ground. Her belly is swollen from feeding and she’s left in discomfort. Her mother hasn’t taken to cleaning her or making sure she’s evacuated properly, so as she squirms away, she offers a quiet cry for help that goes wholly ignored by Ocracoke.

she did her best to care for Ocracoke's whelp, though her main attentions lie with her sister's litter, naturally. but every so often, she made the trip down to the Glen to see the little girl, borne of trauma, mostly ignored by her blind, listless mother. today, the pup squirmed around in the open, whining for Ocracoke, who was, as usual, inattentive.

ears pushed forward, Tahani trotted towards the babe, immediately sinking to her belly and cleaning the pup with long, gentle licks. she encouraged the brown ball of fuzz to come into the ruff of her fur, a warm place for her to sleep. the child's stomach was full--at least she was being fed, if not altogether cared for--so Tahani focused on gingerly massaging her sides with her tongue, trying to relieve the discomfort.

she had a name, but Tahani, in her mind, called her Tatik--faith. she'd been the only one of her siblings to survive, and the healer had faith that she would survive this world, no matter what it threw at her.

When another approaches, Currituck does not shy away. She recognizes the scent and moves closer, allowing herself to be picked up with minimal protest and instead is offered gentle licks of cleaning. She relieves the discomfort swollen inside her. It’s one thing to smell a presence, but finally seeing the blurry white form towering over her gives her a chance for soft coos of pleasure as she’s tended too. These moments are few and far between, even with the touch of her mother, but she enjoys them all the same. It is entirely unknown this isn’t a normal way of living and accepts things as they continue to happen.

Only a few days ago have her ears popped open, giving her the world of sound, and she wiggles the tiny things upon her head eagerly. Eagerly, she moves forward, embracing the warmth of her chest and squirming eagerly between Tahani’s front legs.

she laughed gently, noticing the wiggle of Currituck's tiny ears. she was a bitty thing, and so incredibly cute, Tahani could hardly stand it. she wrapped her neck over the squat little body, creating a sort of cocoon for her to nestle into. she continued to groom, then when things were sorted out, she fell silent for a long moment, content to cuddle the child, the sounds of the forest lulling her into a stupor.

then she was singing, very quietly, an old song in the northern tongue Anânak had once crooned to them, when they were having trouble sleeping. Tahani was sure she had forgotten some of the words, and so she glossed over those passages with muted nonsense syllables, but it was otherwise intact, fresh in her memory as the day she first heard it. her throat rumbled against the child as she went on, mouth curved in a smile.

Prior to her ears opening, things were muted vibrations and Charlie Brown teacher-garble. When sound proved new to her, it barely made a difference. The wolf as her food source barely talked to her or did anything different. Right now, she can barely get around. The birds above were sometimes loud and scary, being exposed since birth instead of in a den like it’s meant to be. Never has she heard a song so when Tahani cocoons her close and offers her music, her eyes widen in surprise. Pupils dilate but the pale figure is no less blurry than before and her ears twitch upon her head in surprise. Something so pleasant has never been heard so sweet and she lifts her nose and wails the tiniest of howls to try and mimic the sounds coming from the northern wolf.

her singing ceased slightly as Currituck began to sing along with her, at least the best she could, and her mouth stretched wide in a smile. "yes, very good," she praised, nodding down at the little one, her voice still musical and crooning even in plain speech. "i needed a duet partner." she gave Tatik a long lick over her head, smoothing down the downy fur there.

she moved slightly back and forth, in a rocking motion, as if she were the mother and not the blind woman. it felt peaceful, lulling her into a sense of comfort, and she closed her eyes, breathing in the sweet scent of a young pup. she continued to sing, but only in fragments, voice so quiet it cut in and out as she took low, slow breaths.

Her howl is interrupted by the lick to her face and she wrinkles her nose and makes a face. When the voice picks back up, she offers a strangled cry and it takes several more attempts before a smooth one comes out. A high pitched wail to try and mimic the strange sound to her ears. Before she knows it, she’s tired, a belly fully milk lulling her off to a quiet slumber. The gentle notes of the woman help take her into sleep and she rolls into one arm, leaning into the pale wolf as she drifts off.

sweet Tatik. her heart swelled suddenly, overwhelmingly, as the pup tried again, then relaxed into milk-induced slumber, curled against her. was this what motherhood felt like? she wondered if the bond was even stronger when the child had come from your own womb--was completely yours by blood. she suddenly lamented the lack of a mate, but closed her eyes, shaking her head.

no, a mate wasn't everything. after all, Shivali's man had barely been seen around the pups. did he know? did he know they were his? surely he must, else he must assume that Shiv had slept around, and that was completely unlike her sister to do so. if he had drawn that assumption. . .she felt an urge to correct him, swiftly, firmly, and tempered her anger, drawing a deep breath as she inhaled the sweet scent that lined the crown of Currituck's head.

she was content right here, cuddling the child of her heart. whatever happened next was up to fate.
