Chases Crows was a good friend to Always Running, and didn't deserve what she was about to do to him.

But she'd been found. She thought maybe, if she kept her paws moving and her head up and ears forward, he would never find her again. She would never be dragged back to the life that had been preordained for her, and she could find some semblance of peace. Perhaps she and Grawlix could build up a similar life but without the need for arranging things, for taking choice away from other young wolves. That was a foolish thing to think, though. Of course he would find her. She secured the future of his pack, after all; an alliance forged of necessity, and forged only with an eternal bond.

She was sleeping in the Shadewood, near to Chases Crows but not near enough that her stirring would wake him, when she was found. It was the feeling of eyes crawling over her hide that made her lift her head and meet a pair of soft golden eyes in the dark, framed in a pale face with dark slashes of colour beneath each eye. Her ears flew back and she went rigid. How? They had walked so far, and ran some of the way. How had he found her?

But he had, and Always Running did exactly what she did best: she ran, leaving Grawlix behind, pursued by the man she was meant to marry but had no desire to.
