@Aditya forward dated to uhh whenever lmfao, two days after the ikk thread
Well, it was a nice forest, if nothing else.
River was hungry, tired, and sort of regretting his decisions. Actually, no, he was really regretting his decisions; earlier in the day he'd gotten careless, and stepped on a giant thorn. Well, not actually giant— but pretty big, and it hurt pretty bad, and wow. Ow. He hadn't gotten up the nerve to pull it out just yet, so he'd just decided to forego use of that paw until he got there.
Well, now was the time to get there, apparently. His paw was throbbing and aching, and he just couldn't stand the thorn in it anymore. So, he found a nice tree to lean against and settled on his haunches, bringing his paw up to his face and squinting at it. Ugh. After several minutes of staring at it and feeling queasy, he took the thorn between his teeth and gave it a hard yank before he could change his mind. It came loose, though not easily and not without pain— and he promptly dropped it and squeaked, paw steadily oozing blood now.

after everything had gotten settled on the plains, aditya set out to look for river, heart pounding hard in his chest. he followed the scent, but the boy had meandered, and it took a while. not to mention the fact that he'd not been eating as much, lately, and therefore was not at his physical prime; he had to stop and rest quite often, catching his breath or dozing off in the shade.

finally, he entered the emberwood as the boy's scent grew stronger and stronger. not caring about how loud he was being, adi thrust his burly body through the brush, sending squirrels and rabbits flying in his wake. at last, he caught sight of gray within the green and brown, and broke into an awkward trot, leaping over a fallen log to find himself face-to-face with the little fugitive.

"mithra," adi gasped, rushing to his side. his first instinct was to be stern, but then he noticed the bloody paw, and cocked his head, brows drawn together. "what happened?" he demanded, mouth contorted in worry.

Whoever was approaching, they weren't quiet about it; by the time the other came into sight and River had registered that it was Aditya, the hair along his spine had risen in fear. It settled as he recognized the golden wolf, but he swallowed and rose anyway, taking a step back on three legs. Actually, he still hadn't forgiven Aditya or Dawn— it was terribly unfair of them to be so sharp with him, after more or less ignoring him for what seemed like forever.
Stepped on a thorn, He mumbled sullenly in response to the question, glancing back over his shoulder briefly and wondering if he could outrun Aditya on three legs. It didn't seem likely. He sighed through his nose, looking anywhere but the other wolf as he tried to sort through his thoughts. After a few moments, though, he glanced up and spoke, voice trembling and full of conviction. I don't want to go home.

"beta" = "son", pronounced "bih-tta", not like the Greek letter :P

he frowned at the boy's grumbling attitude, but said nothing, dipping his head to peer more carefully at the wound. it wasn't too terrible, but it was bleeding, and open wounds out in the wilderness, without proper care, tended to get infected. pema should take a look at the paw right away. aditya was just about to order river to come back with him this instant when the pup spoke again.

not without some sympathy in his face, aditya squatted slightly to bring himself eye-to-eye with river. "you have to go home, beta," the sentinel murmured, blinking softly. "your mother's been worried. your sister's been worried. i've been worried, too." he nodded at the paw, held aloft. "pema needs to look at your foot, but even if you weren't injured. . ."

he sighed. "i'm sorry i snapped at you, in the maplewood," he gave in, adding, "but you can't rush into things like that. you could have gotten hurt. those wolves could have been dangerous. i just want to keep you and your brother and sister safe." aditya cocked his head, rising to his full height once more. "do you understand?" he asked, the sternness in his voice gone.

He tensed first when Aditya squatted to be level with him, but quickly relaxed when he registered his tone. He listened, though not without some reluctance. Guilt tugged at him as he did; he knew Aditya was right, and somehow getting the apology made him feel less justified in running away.
Yes, He mumbled, casting his gaze to the ground. Then, because it was easier to talk about than the whole running away ordeal: What happened with all the white wolves?

it seemed reluctant, but it did appear as if river understood the weight of what he had done; he sought the boy's gaze and could not match it, low as it was. instead, another question came, and he sighed, shifting his weight. it was complicated, but not so much that it was impossible to break it down into something simpler.

"they were on our hunting grounds without our permission," aditya said simply. "they weren't happy about having to leave. it could have turned into a fight." hungry wolves were dangerous wolves. the pale-furred pack could have been the kindest group of wolves, under any other circumstance, but they had posed an imminent and serious threat to morningside.
