Consciousness came to her in the form of teeth around her scruff, light flickering back in the final moments of her rescue. Her lungs were so heavy she didn't dare try to breathe, but in a moment her body decided this would not do at all and the first heaves of a violent fit of coughing and retching began. It felt as if a million little knives were digging their way out of her abdomen slowly and deliberately. Salt water came up copiously both from her lungs and stomach, the latter containing bits of plant matter— a scant amount that had escaped her initial purge.
There was no strength left in her. When the coughing and gagging finally subsided, she could only fall limp and breathe. It came fast and shallow, hitching with each rise of cutting pain in her stomach. Aaa—aaahhhh... The cry came softly, and she trembled. The trembling stopped after a few beats, and she went rigid. Then, a violent tremor took hold of her body, different from the cold, pained shivering from before. It lasted over a minute, and as soon as the seizure released its grip she fell limp again, gasping and crying weakly.
