All Welcome
"Ha!" said Wisp as she popped out of the communal pup den in the morning, tail whirring. Prior to the arrival of the other pups, Wisp had been reluctant at best to leave the safety of the den. The first time out, she'd had a panic attack when a butterfly flew uncomfortably close to her head, and after that she hadn't wanted to go out again. But with Ibis, Okeanos and the others making the den equally uncomfortable, Wisp quickly got over her aversion to the outdoors and spent a good deal of time just outside the den's entrance.

Tip, tap, top, tup, went Wisp's mind with each step she took, clearing the space between the den's wide mouth and a clump of dirt several feet away. She leaned forward as she walked, like she was very interested in something, and sat clumsily down beside the clod with a giggle. "Ha!" she proclaimed, and for the next five minutes, stared directly and intensely at the clump.

Wraen had returned from her early morning hunt and decided to take a nap not too far away from the communal den, where all the puppies resided now. She was not very sure, if the idea of having all of them live in the same place, was such a good one, but trusted that people, who handled inside pack matters knew, what they were doing. And that she should not meddle much and stick to, what she was best at doing herself. But choosing a napping place so close was her contribution to the defenses. With one ear and eye always half-open to the comings and goings around her she would be ready to spring in action, if it was required.

An hour or so later, when Wraen had moved to sleep in the shade to avoid the sunlight and had been about to enter the deep sleep phase, a loud "HA!" woke her up. She sighed, opened her eyes and yawning, rolled to her belly to see, who was the trouble-maker. And it turned out to be one of Rannoch's brood, sitting in the clearing, staring at a clump of dirt intently and all in all appearing very smug with herself/himself (Wraen could not tell from the distance, which gender it was).

She got to her feet and came near to the puppy, first to make sure that it was alright, then to have a sniff at the clump to find out, what was so curious about it.

Her eyes traced every contour of the clod, the chinks of missing dirt and the rocks jutting from it. Small grey stones spiked asymmetrically out of it at the corners, while tinier brown and black pebbles dotted the rough surface. Wisp's nose worked curiously as she wobbled in place, eyes glued to it. How did it get there? Where was it from? What would it look like smashed apart? What did it taste like? What could she do with a shape like that?

Wisp was so hyper-focused on the chunk of dirt that Wraen's approach went almost unnoticed. She didn't heed the adult checking on her, nor did she seem to notice the countershaded Beta when she leaned down to sniff the clump. Wisp just side-stepped, never taking her eyes off the fascinating object, until she was able to see it properly again, and leaned forward on her toes to continue her dramatic staring.

What was it made of?

Unlike Wisp, Wraen found nothing interesting about the clod after the brief and superficial examination she had given it, but she was not going to divert the kid's attention from it, if she was not done looking at it herself. Therefore to pass the time, until the interest in the inanimate objet waned, Wraen lied down and began to groom the underside of her paws, picking out little pieces of dirt, grass and plant seeds that had accumulated in the fur between her fingers.

And, if the kid got either bored or had any questions on the matter, she would be there to help in any way she could.

Dirt. Her mind seemed to summon the word from somewhere in her miniscule dictionary and presented it to her, and just like that, her inspection was complete. She hadn't moved besides her brief side-step to keep the clod in view, and hadn't approached it or touched it or otherwise gave any indication that she wanted to investigate up close. She didn't need to. Her mind was already whirring just from afar, and she had already deconstructed it in her mind.

She may have made to approach then and act on some of her previous queries, but she became acutely aware of Wraen's presence all of a sudden and froze in place. Her baby blues slowly panned over Wraen's grey-brown nose, avidly avoiding the woman's eyes like they would burn her if she made contact, and then settled somewhere to the left of her head. The hair on her nape stood up uncomfortably.

Overwhelmed by the sudden, seemingly unannounced presence, Wisp began to pick her way in a strange sideways shuffle back toward the den with her legs splayed out and her head low, resembling a spooked kitten.

Wraen was in the process of chewing off a split nail and was thinking that in a matter of time she would have to seek out a proper place to relieve her bladder, when she happened to side-glance at the puppy. It's attention had shifted from the piece of dirt in front of her and now was focused entirely on her.

"What's wrong, little bean?" Wraen asked, looking first at the kid, then around, as if looking for something or someone else besides her that could have spooked her. "I am not here to eat you," she added, now changing her position to lie on her side. That was the closest she could get to be within the same level of the spooked kid and perhaps this would encourage the little one to approach.

It would require very little observation on Wraen's part to realize that Wisp wasn't quite like the typical excitable, sociable month-old pup. For whatever reason, even at an age where nothing should frighten her and everything should be regarded as a friend for better or worse, Wisp took to change as poorly as a fish took to lava. New bodies either frightened her or made her uneasy and anxious, and changes in her environment were taken even less kindly. She had a routine for everything, and the sudden appearance of a wolf like Wraen disrupted it.

It was specifically the sudden appearance, for while she was hyperfocused on the clod, Wisp hadn't noticed the grey-furred wolf at all. She had been in a world of her own. To come back to herself and find someone new already there was disorienting for her, and so she slunk down to the ground and her tail wriggled submissively while her gaze kept to the woman's paws. She spoke words, prompting Wisp's ears to turn forward, but what little comprehension she had at this juncture wouldn't suffice.

She whined softly and glanced back toward the den, half-expecting that Remi or Breccan or Deshyr would come out and rescue her.

Wraen's experience with children was limited to the Redleaf-DiSarinno clan and shyness was not a trait one would encounter in this wolf line. On one end of the spectrum were rambunctious, fearless and always curious explorers and on the other self-sufficient, introvert and highly-intelligent individuals. And then in the middle came a mix of both in various proportions. Therefore she did not get, what was wrong with the Rannoch's pup (or more precisely, what was characteristic for her, right away).

Therefore after a little thinking she came to a conclusion that she must appear like a Goliath to the little David and therefore any attempts at making herself smaller and harmlesser (if there is such a word) would be fruitless. Perhaps, if she diverted her sole attention from the kid and focused on something else, would cure the situation for the better? She looked around, spotted a piece of antler, that had suffered from many sharp and pointy teeth, as well as eager chewers. Without paying much attention to the spooked girl, she got to her feet, picked up the piece and then returned to lie down in her initial place.

She nosed the full length of antler and then began to chew on one end. If this failed to make contact with the kid, Wraen would at least not feel entirely awkward.

Another day and another time, perhaps, for them to meet properly. Wisp was too spooked by Wraen's unexpected arrival to do any reaching out today, so when the adult wolf turned her attention onto a chunk of antler, the golden cub scurried away to the safety and security of the family den.

Oh, well, you live and you learn. Wraen watched the puppy disappear, feeling a little disappointed that their first meeting had not gone as pleasantly as she would have wanted. But - on the other hand - she had learned a thing or two about this baby (whose name she would ask later to either Liffey or Rannoch) and noted that she had to be very careful with her in the future.

Feeling that there was no need to chew the antler in the vicinity of the den any longer, she picked it up and left for the place, where she and Maia resided. If her sibling was there, perhaps, she would be interested in a game of chase and a bit of fight over this piece of treasure. And actually - she had to admit - stealing a kid's toy was oddly pleasant.
