dismal now her tread. she had left her children behind; she had come to among their bodies in convulsions. and if she had woken them, relmyna did not know, for a growl had been passed back along her thin-boned shoulder; stay here. do not follow. even astara would heed her, she hoped.
and so out along the flat glitter of flowing stream did the patchwork thing travel, 'neath moon half curved in black velvet, swathed in bracelets of starlight. the current eddied, forked; a stand of moonlit alder trees, and there the scent of ripened currents, the sound of nightbirds cooing sleepily to one another in the darkened boughs.
she too was compelled by the crescent orb; priestess; madwoman; mother; crone — none and all of these was she. with relmyna had come the rock of tongues; presently she lay it gently between her small forepaws and caressed the great mistress of the sky with a yearning gaze.

the night that met iliksis was neither friendly nor kind; the wane light the sliver of a moon afforded was distant and cold, remote and unfeeling as he stalked along the night-dew. his own thoughts clouded him far more than the sky did, and before long he felt an old tug compel his footsteps.

not surprisingly, he found himself headed in a direction he knew well, and knew how it would end. for a while the only witness to his passing were birds sequestered in thin, scraggly trees - but they too drew silent, as he drew nearer.

a scent he knew well lingered in this place; obediently, the man followed it until he came upon her. presently, her attention was fixated on a stone clutched between her paws and for a moment iliksis hung the balance between ferocious lust to consume her, and a tentative fear to even approach her. in many ways, relmyna might have been his maker, and iliksis was fully cognizant of that as he drifted alongside her, his pensive gaze resting on the strange token clutched between her thin paws.

as if by her sorrow beneath the moonbow she had summoned him, the dybukk emerged from the shadows. relmyna set her seagreen eyes upon him, tracing the outline of iliksis, where he had grown even more bony and tattered in the absence that had spread between them. her thoughts turned to the growing children of light and of shadow; while relmyna wished in her heart to believe sheogorath had been their father, there was no true way to know that the devil was not.
but he had not come for her; or perhaps he had. the woman lifted her chin and gazed without fear at the man who had so moved in her world, and despite the cool regard of her eyes, her torn lips curved briefly in a quiet welcome.

the male looked from the clutched token, to the cool gaze of that silent she-wolf; he dared to gaze within those chilled depths only a moment before he drew his gaze lengthwise across her hard muzzle, thin cheeks, lean form.

there was no challenge in his posture, only a wearied, chipped-away aspect. he caught the glinting edge of her teeth, a sly smile that was rewarded with a thin smile of his own, a treasure he would keep and think of later.

"what is that?" he asked, dully looking to the trinket held between her paws. he expected no verbal answer, yet studied the strange orb with a dread wariness.

he spoke, and she could not remember if she had ever heard his voice. surely he knew she herself could not speak — but it ocurred to relmyna that he did not. their liasions had not been ones marked by the use of words. lifting a paw to her throat, she waited until he took heed of the gesture, and then nosed the bauble toward him.
as of late, her communion with the gods had become more direct. and thus her use of the stone had dropped, and her need for it as well. yet her regard for the gift that had been granted her did not now escape relmyna's reverence, and she watched iliksis pointedly to convey that sentiment.

he traced the rise of her delicate wrist; fine, thin-boned. it rested against her throat, and the man studied the impalpable flutter of bounding blood that stirred under her pale coat. the motion she conjured received no answer -- unless the flicker of his dull eyes were answer in their own right.

and then the strange stone was proffered to him; just glancing upon its smooth surface iliksis was left with the impression whatever power it wielded was far beyond his control. he somehow was struck with the unerring sensation that the cricket was not his to command.

when he looked from the stone he found her cool turquoise gaze upon him; the sentiment was clearly conveyed. he answered with a shrug of his shoulders, for whatever meaning the stone had, it had very little meaning to him.

they moved in the sort of dance that had characterized their meet from the beginning; she lifted her chin and looked upon him, and he upon her, with a hunger that had not abated in their time apart. many months had passed and she had grown cold without a lover's touch.
but there was no romance in this man; not in the flat mad glitter of his eyes nor in the sable lines of his thin-boned body. and yet still the mutewoman rose; she flung briefly her pale plume over her hips before approaching until the distance between them had been closed. there she lifted to him her gaze and traced his features with an expression not unlike a muted warmth.
stay. for a time, she whispered noiselessly to him; he was ardent, violent, but a breath to stoke the ever-present ember within her.

he did not make the stone his object of attention for long; whatever worth it had, it had the most worth carried by relmyna's will - inexplicably, the man knew that.

his heart thrummed in a quickened pace as she rose, her tail furling over her narrow hips as she approached. he remained still despite the worm instinct rising within him. it was strange to think the man from the mountain was hers to command, yet he was -- with hunger unabated in his gestures he stepped towards her, his muzzle low as it brushed along the scarred surface of her cheek.

he came; he drew close and his ravening for her burned in the pair of them. relmyna lifted her face to his, eagerly preening along one side of the dybukk's narrow face. a low whine trembled in her throat; it had been so long since she had felt the touch of another. the listener had spent little time assessing the root of her attraction to the twisted shadow; it was a mutual satisfaction, even oiled with things should would rather not know as accompaniment.
at a clip she set off for a stand of trees, not glancing over her shoulder this time; relmyna was confident he would follow. and for reasons she too put aside, the priestess was moved by his dubious sort of devotion, the fickle hunger that ruled him enough to make him desire her.

she did not rebuff his advances; the stone was long forgotten as her teeth clipped along his teeth. a shudder climbed the man's spine, and he quickly stilled it. his gaze lingered after relmyna, who moved with a quiet fluidity away from him. the distance she left was keen, and he was suddenly aware of the brushing cold of her absence.

he was more sheep than man then, as he too turned and followed her to whatever destination she designed.

there was some trepidation within relmyna at her lack of fear when it came to the devil; he had not hurt her, nor had he come against her children. but she would keep them parted all the same; no, no, this liasion was for her and her alone. a lust no worship could slake, and for the darktar touch of the man who followed behind.
a croon from her slim throat; she sought to touch his face, his shoulder in the darker gloom cast by the gathered trees. presently her gaze climbed to his; she was unafraid to look upon him now. ilkisis, came her quiet mouthing; she knew him from his stand against vaati but to her he was altogether a different thing.

as he walked in step behind her, his gaze fell to the weave of each slender hip. an old hunger gripped him, monstrous and infernal -- his step faltered.

he could continue to follow her, and he knew what would happen next. it would not be the liaison she would expect -- and for that, despite the insurgence of primal violence that clotted his mind and cloyed his senses, iliksis drew to a stop.

she had turned around to face him then, and he thought he saw in the deep turquoise of her eye's flat depth his own future reflection, fractured by dark pools of fear or pain. she was not afraid now, but she would be -- his blood hammered, its course so resounding that he felt it pound beyond the meaty gristle behind his eyes.

iliksis had wanted many things in his life. some he had gotten, others he had taken or stolen -- but he would not defile this. determined, and terrified by the roaring incubus that rose its ugly head in his emotions, iliksis fled relmyna's presence.

when she turned, it was to watch the oilslick line of his back disappear. she did not move after him, nor call him back; he was a twisted and darkened thing, and she had found in this some catharsis when it came to their forbidden coupling. but dread washed over her, followed by relief, then gratitude — he was a devil, and she had given herself all too willingly to be burned by those flames, never to return to her daughters or to blackfeather.
for a long swathe of time, relmyna stared unseeingly at the last place she knew somehow she would ever see him.
