All Welcome
She had been good today. No wild escapes, nothing particularly out of the ordinary. The morning had shifted into a bright day, and now it waned towards a hazy evening. Phoebe had stretched herself out along the mouth of the den, soaking up the last few rays of sunlight that slipped and shimmered between leaves, a lazy display that was everything but for her. Her ears turned this way and that, listening in on everything from the soft (and sometimes not so soft) voices in the den to the sawing call of cicadas thick from the foliage.

Occasionally she heard the shuffle of footfalls as they moved nearby, but no visitors had come too close. If they had ever had a need of either parent, there would be a summons, and then the motley crew of puppies were either left with the parent not to go, or shuffled off on select chew toys. Er, wait, babysitters. That's right, the babysitters. But she hadn't seen them either, which may have been a good thing since there was little question they all needed a break at some point.

A grasshopper flitted close by as nothing more than a blur, and it caught her attention as it landed in the soft soil forever strewn about. That had her attention now—her tongue snaked out to lick her snout as she wondered after it. What did it taste like? Could she eat it? Well, she knew she could eat it, because she was pretty sure Kite may have helped herself to some insect delicacies. Vasa too, for that matter. Suddenly, Phoebe came to a decision.

Crawling forward on her belly, she inched towards the grasshopper with all the precision of a tank.

He had been home for a few days and had been scolded on leaving the territory but not as bad as he had expected. The welcome home was great even though he had yet to see his brother. He was feeling even better, despite still having some infection and being on the thinner side of healthy. He never wanted to leave home again but...

He still loved wandering around the pack. That day he wanted to see Raven, wondering if she was still fat and filled with babies. So he wandered toward the den and instead of Raven was met with the sight of a small girl trying to capture a hoppy bug. He grinned and wagged his tail, watching her quietly. It was his favorite game, trying to capture the green bugs that could jump higher then he could stand, but he wouldn't ruin the girl's fun.

The closer she got, the more brazen she felt. The grasshopper had long noticed Phoebe's less than stealthy approach and now regarded her with advantageous caution. It would serve it well, for the approach of another sent it fleeing into the high brush with a simple flick of its legs... and left a crestfallen little she-wolf in its wake. A pout dared to cross her eager features for the briefest of moments, but curiosity took up more than the slack left to pull her in another direction.

"Hey!" she exclaimed. "You scared my bug off!" The words were out of her mouth before she even realized who it was, having expected one of her other siblings to have come up to ruin her fun. This fellow was definitely not one of them, easily twice her size already with all the signs of a gangly boy mostly grown into his body. Her ears fanned back and her brow furrowed—"Who are you, huh?"

Tywyll snorted as the Grasshopper leaped away and vanished within seconds, leaving the girl standing there pouting. The expression of disappointment made him feel bad but because he was a jerky little brat, he chuckled at her until she lifted her head and shouted accusations at him. He blinked once not quite comprehending that he was being yelled at by a teeny little girl. "Me? Your awful stalking probably scared off all the bugs within this area" he retorted snarkily staring her down. "I'm Tywyll. Who are you?" he asked, unable to help the fact that he was curious about this annoying girl. Now that he thought of it, he hadn't ever met a girl even relatively close to his age. Were they all this shouty and annoying?

Awful stalking? Just who in the hell did he think he was? A flash of indignation crossed her gaze, but she didn't act on the anger that bubbled up. Maybe if one of her siblings were here it would have been another case, because lashing out was always better with another. Plus, Phoebe reasoned in her young mind, two on one would teach his brat a lesson. In the same stroke as her anger ebbed, she also knew it would have gotten her in a lot of trouble if she were to go around acting like some unmannerly hellion.

Somehow in the end, ultimately disappointing either parent did not quite appeal to her, and it certainly wasn't worth getting left in the care of whatever sitter happened to be around the next time something fun came up. So instead of humoring the boy with a response, she huffed and turned her nose up. Take the cold shoulder then—she was going back inside.
