Reek awoke to the sound of songbirds. He stretched his lanky limbs and pulled himself away from the pile he and Tavi had created with jaws stretched wide with a tired yawn. Taking a few steps forward on the cold cave floor, Reek pawed at the sleepy crust around his eyes. He pushed forward, beginning his day in the usual way.

Today was the day his claim would begin. Apart from Tavi and single other wolf, Reek's small clan was near nonexistent in size, but there were other things to do than recruit. He would begin marking the borders, thus setting the boundary of his territory. Reek left the cave, leaving Tavi asleep behind him and set out through rocky terrain to begin marking the southern border.

Lifting a leg in the warm spring air, Reek let loose the floodgates, thus claiming this place in his name and scent.
The raven watched the male in silence, her amber orbs glowing in the dark. Her paw was healing now, for she had been tending to it, so she was able to travel again. As soon as she could, she did. There was no time to lose. She had to hunt, defend herself, and keep a secure territory without a pack. Nuh-uh. On her travels, she had come across the male. He was ragged and dirty but looked quite confident. The scarlet-marked raven's sleek, smooth coat was much different than his, but they still shared the same dark color. She materialized from the shadows, about 300 feet from the wolf. Seeing as she could cover that distance in seconds due to her long legs, it really wasn't to far.

Her gaze settled on him, and she wondered if he had noticed her. After all, she was like a red beacon in the sunlight. Ah well, It wouldn't hurt to meet another wolf. That was, as long as they didn't result in another injury.
With leg lifted high, Reek took aim at a large rock— one of many that populated the land surrounding the grotto in what seemed to be large, lifeless herds. This rock, now doused with a steady stream of eau de Reek was now his... much like the other rocks of the territory who's ownership would go on to be inferred. The simplicity of it brought Reek a smile: genuine, unlike the mask he wore after losing his claim over the Maplewood, and even more painful, his right to be a father.

Reek lifted his head as soon as the act was done and peered into the distance. There, he spotted the form of a wolf. If wolves were already starting to flock to him, then this whole recruitment thing was turning out to be a piece of cake. Reek lifted a brow, inviting the other wolf close to speak.
The raven woman stepped into the light, the dawn caressing her sleek figure. She nodded to him respectfully, seeing as this was probably his territory. He had, after all, marked it before her eyes. She gave a soft grunt, almost a chuff, but not. "Your territory I'm guessing? I haven't seen you around here though, you must be new to these parts." Her voice was rich and deep, giving her a powerful aura. She flicked her tail and padded farther into the light, eventually resting her haunches on the ground. Her tall figure cast a long shadow that splashed over anything other the soft ground.
sorry for the short post today
While she approached, Reek remained still. With lifted leg now settled beside him, Reek stood proud and tall. His claim may have been new, but it did not make it any less legitimate. The grotto was his... and by the power of his urine, all in the area (or, within smelling distance) would know that it was rightfully owned.

Things were starting to fall into place. With a prospective joiner on his border, Reek felt as if he was back at the Maplewood; head man in charge once again, but that was not the case and the thought made him sad. This grotto would be something new entirely. "Right you are," he said, regarding the stranger with a smile. "I just started marking." Soon, when the entire border was covered with his scent and wolves filled his ranks, his preasence in the north would be solidified.

"I'm Reek." He shot the stranger a friendly nod. "And you are?"
"Greetings. I'm Eslani.(Es-lon-ee)Pleasure to meet you, Reek. Do you happen to be starting up a pack?" She cocked her head, honestly interested, and smiled back at him slightly. He seemed like a good wolf. She wondered if he was in need of pack members, for she was in need of a pack. She lowered her tail respectively and wondered of his thoughts. If he was starting a pack, would she be accepted? Thoughts chased each other in her head.
"Eslani," he repeated slowly.  Her name was a strange one; unique in it's own way. He had never met an Eslani before, but in these parts, he rarely met any wolves with the name of another aquiantance. Naming conventions around these parts were relatively lax it seemed— pushing a level of uniqueness that Reek admired.

Watching as her body language as it took an even more respectful turn, Eslani earned herself a bushel of brownie points. Reek nodded and said, "Yep," before finally asking, "You looking for a home?" The grotto needed all the wolves it could get. Adding Eslani to the ranks would only add to their legitimacy.
She looked to him and gave a soft nod. She wanted to be respectful to him if she were to join his pack. "Yes, I've been wandering for a while now. Hehe, I got into a scuffle with another pack because I accidentally trespassed. I cut my paw in the process but I'm slowly healing. I guess a pack would be good for that." She gave a worried smile and looked, once again at her right paw. "Are you currently accepting members? Do you need any knights? I am a trained female warrior. I'm bred to protect the alpha pair, as a guardian." She lifted her head, hope flooding her eyes for the first time in weeks. Could this possibly be her home?

She may have been injured, but she didn't appear to be underfed— thus suggesting that Eslani could still hunt. That is where her use would lie. He didn't feel he necessarily needed a knight— as Reek could typically hold his own in a fight and he felt the same about Tavi, but there was always room in the pack for another able body. He nodded. "We are," he said, then beckoning her to cross the newly established southern border.

"If you can hunt, I need you to start filling the caches." She would have to start now, but that was the price of settling within the grotto. There would be no free rides. With the daunting task of marking the border and filling the pack with recruits, Reek hardly had enough time to hunt, nor did his skill set really align with wrangling prey. If Elsani could do this for the pack, her position among them would be solidified. "Oh, and welcome home. Go meet the others when you're done," he said, pulling away from the new recruit to continue his patrol.
Does happy wolfy dance*

Relief pooled in Eslani's heart. She had a pack, a pack that she could work with. Although she expected things to be much easier from here on out, she knew that she had to play a role in helping, and she was willing to do so. The capable young female dipped her head to him in respect and gratitude. She trotted across the borders. "Thankyou, Alpha. I will begin hunting." The word was new on her tongue, but she knew it would set in easily. Ahh yes, this would be great.

Eslani let out a puff of excitement as she trotted, off in search of prey. She had a home.
