Ever on the quest to find food for himself, and now for his packmates, the smokey wolf's paws took him east of the homestead that morning. Just when things seemed their bleakest they started to look up. His stomach burned with hunger, but he noted with relief the return of greenery, emerging from the soil and peeking from fresh buds on the trees as nature worked to renew herself. This was not all that was returning; Rexxar paused to shove his nose into the tracks of a small group of deer. The herds were returning. He breathed in the fresh interdigital scent, letting his chest swell with it. It was the dawn after the dark, and he followed the trail to the beaver's haunt, where it was lost to the water.

He may have continued his pursuit, were it not for two things: one, he needed the support of his pack to hunt deer, and two, a beaver swimming in the pond caught his eye. Rexxar mounted the dam and watched the creature as it swam back and forth, eyeballing him warily. It was a large beaver, and a bold one. It swam nearer to the dam and then with a great slap of its tail, it showered Rexxar and disappeared beneath the surface. The wolf chuckled, and swiped his tongue along his now damp lips and nose.
