Steady laid in the spot where Krypton had disappeared hours before, his head on his front legs that were stretched out before him, doing his best to refuse that she was gone. He had at least finally come to understand that her reason for leaving had nothing to do with Silvertip Mountain, nothing to do with him. There were things outside of this part of her family that was calling her, and she had to go.

He was still hurt by the fact that if he hadn't been doing a late patrol, he never would have known that she had left, or why. She would have just vanished overnight. He still didn't understand that. No matter her reason for leaving, he thought she, and each of their family members here, would have had the decency to verbalize their leaving, even if they refused to say why. But, she had no intention of that.

A whine escaped his throat. Maybe he was being over dramatic. After all, Krypton had said she wouldn't be gone for long. But, he couldn't help but think that she wouldn't. There was obviously something strong that called her away- what if it kept her away? He didn't even know if he was supposed to find himself another Beta or not. Would that be rude- to simply replace her like that? He sighed, his gaze still on the spot he had last seen her in the distance.
Ezekiel was out on a patrol when he found Steady, lying on the ground and whining. He watched from the distance for a minute. Paused in his tracks as he watched hi friend. Had something happened? Niita? Valette? Zeke began to worry, so he rushed from his bracken cover over to the alpha's side. He did they too close, not wanting to intrude or startle Steady, but looked around cautiously. After clearing that no intruders were nearby, Zeke went towards Steady and sniffed him and checked him out. No blood, he wasn't injured.

The gamma stepped back, fur still bristling as he worried. He bowed his head quickly, a brief respectful gesture to his alpha's rank. What's wrong, I thought you were in trouble or something? He said, calming down quickly and sitting down, allowing his fur to lie flat. There was no imminent danger, but he'd never seen Steady so distraught. Something must've happened to make the black wolf this way.
It wasn't long before he was no longer alone. Ezekiel's scent preceded his voice, but Steady made no move to lift his head from his forelegs. He didn't mind his friend being close, and gave no indication that he shouldn't be. Krypton left, he said softly, the sadness evident in his voice. She was just going to leave, without a word to anyone.

That was the part he just couldn't wrap his head around. She was so loyal, and such a great friend and pack mate. After everything, how could she think it would hurt less if she vanished without an explanation? If she had come to him, explained what was going on, he would have understood. Instead, he had been blindsided and shocked. He knew his reaction hadn't been supportive, but somewhere deep down, he was. He understood family and the need to check up on them, but what about this family? They deserved more than just a silent departure.
By the way that Steady didn't lift his head to acknowledge Ezekiel, Zeke knew something wasn't right. However he wasn't expecting what Steady told him. Krypton leave? She had been the first face he'd seen in Teekon Wilds. She'd taken him here. She was the reason that he knew Steady and Niita, had a rivalry with Anita, and met Valette. Krypton may have not always been physically there, but she was always there. A true friend, he respected her. How could she have just left? Without a good bye too?

Zeke was shocked, and though he wasn't the most sensitive of guys, he still felt sad. Steady was taking it a lot worse. That really... Blows. He said, devoid of a better word to describe the situation. It did make him feel a little bitterness towards the female, but he hadn't heard the whole story yet. There had to be some reason why she left. She tell you why? He asked, a scowl spread across his dark features.
Steady scoffed softly. Yeah, it did blow, and more. Yeah. Said that she needed to go check on her family, he explained, finally lifting his head to look at Ezekiel. I understand that part, but I came upon her trying to leave without telling anyone. Why would she do that after all we've been through?

Maybe Ezekiel would be able to explain in a way that would make Steady understand. The Alpha had racked his brain for a couple hours now, trying to figure it out, and he had come up with nothing.
To go check on her family? Weren't they her family? This was one thing Ezekiel didn't understand. He never had any will to go check up on his family. If he ran into maybe Jojo or Gabe then he might be happy, but he wasn't ever going looking for them. He'd never understood how some people were so close to their family. Family was those with you, who you cared about. Whoever Krypton's family was, were they really more important that the pack she lived with? His fur bristled at the thought, but then settled when he realized that she must love them a whole lot. He knew she cared for Silvertip Mountain, so she must love her blood family a whole damn lot.

Then there was the other thing. The leaving without a trace. That seemed to be eating Steady the most, but Zeke understood this more than the family thing. Maybe... Maybe she just didn't want to draw out her goodbye. Long goodbye's are harder. It was a kind of selfish move, but I understand. I'll miss her. He sighed sadly, remembering when Krypton had taken him to the glass caves. That was a good memory. Yes, they would have to see her again.
Leading a pack of wolves with the tradition of seeing each wolf as family, Steady was not new to the idea that a pack meant more than just blood. The bonds they formed, he hoped, would be strong enough to withstand times like these when wolves were taken from them, for whatever reason. That's why Steady wasn't upset, anymore, over Krypton's reasoning. Family meant everything to him, and it obvious did to her, as well. It was simply her other family that called her away.

Even in understanding, it didn't lesson the pain of her leaving. Ezekiel theorized that maybe she didn't like long goodbyes. Steady couldn't disagree that it was selfish of his Beta to want to leave without saying anything, knowing how much it would hurt. But, Steady could imagine the future if he hadn't of caught Krypton leaving. If she had left without an explanation, and returned after however long, and told me that she had to leave because something drew her away... He shook his head, trying to find the right words. I would have felt betrayed. We would have went all that time, thinking that something happened to her, thinking she could have died, when all along she had left of her own accord. I don't know... I don't know if I would have accepted her back under those terms. We mean more to her than that. We have to. Because she meant more to them.

As those were Steady's feelings, it was lucky that he had caught her and learned why she was leaving. Under the true circumstances, he would gladly accept her back when she returned. And, she did have to return.
Ezekiel understood what Steady was saying, and the alpha was making a very good point. If Steady hadn't caught her and found out why she was leaving, that she was leaving at all, Zeke knew he would be worried. Being a bit of a pessimist, his first guess would be the worst. That she had died or something awful like that. That would have been heart breaking. He dropped his tail a little at the thought, imagining how broken the pack would have been after another suspected death. How could she do that to them? After they assumed the death was over. If Steady hadn't caught her, accepting her being gone would be much harder.

Returning from his gloomy thinking, Ezekiel responded to Steady, sitting by him. She shouldn't have tried that, sneaking away. I know I would've thought she was dead, and I can't take another in this pack dying. But I know we do mean a lot to her. That's how I know she'll be back. He was trying to encourage Steady, but also trying to convince himself that the beta would return.
Steady let his friend's word sink in. Steady fully believed that this pack and the wolves here did mean a lot to Krypton, otherwise she wouldn't have been so loyal all this time. But, it also confused him all the more that she would leave without a word. Ezekiel as confident she would be back, and Steady had to believe the same. It just didn't make sense for her not to.

He nodded to Ezekiel and sighed. You make a good point, he admitted. He was really glad he had a friend like Ezekiel to confide in. I'll just... Wait. Until she gets back. However long that was. Steady didn't really care how long it was. When Krypton came back, he would be ecstatic.
Steady sighed and nodded, hopefully he finally understood. Ezekiel nodded back, glad he could be of any help. Krypton leaving bothered him too, but they could get past it. And he truly did believe she'd be back, and had to keep believing. Another thought popped into his head as he sat by Steady's side. He wasn't sure if it was too soon, but he found it important. I'm sure Krypton will be back, but who's gonna lead with you until she does? I know you can lead by yourself, but I'm here if you need me. Or you could always promote Niita. She'd be a great alpha. It was only a suggestion, but he did think Steady's mate would make a good leader.

Sorry kind of short!
No worries! <3

Ezekiel brought up the fact that the open position of Beta was now open with Krypton’s leaving. If she had given a time frame, he would have simply left it open and did the best he could on his own. But, with an open-ended absence, he wasn’t so sure he could do that. I know what leading with and without her means, and it was a lot easier with someone else helping me out. I’m just not sure yet who might take that spot.

If Steady was honest with himself, he would admit Ezekiel himself was really the next logical choice. He hadn’t been here nearly as long as Krypton, but he had longer than any of the others. While his friend seemed to have had his ups and downs when he first came here, Steady knew Ezekiel had been loyal, and didn’t doubt, at least not much, that he could do it. Who do you think would be good? He asked, wondering if Ezekiel would name himself.
Suddenly Steady turned Ezekiel's questions to him. Who did Zeke think would make a good beta? He had expected Steady to make the decision himself, but Zeke didn't mind helping out. His first choices for beta would be Niita, Valette, or Chaska. The three he knew and trusted the most. Valette was a strong, leader type who could help Steady make decisions, however she was ambitious. Her goals of being a ranger might cause her to be away from the pack too much. Then Chaska was a loyal and trustworthy friend, but he seemed a bit unstable at the moment. Niita would be his top choice.

Well I am a bit biased since I don't actually hang out with most of the pack. But I do know Niita, and I'd trust her to be a good beta. I mean, I wouldn't mind being beta either but it's up to you. Whoever you choose will deserve it. He added himself in as sort of a joke, but it wasn't a lie. He'd been a beta before, though there life was a little different. There being beta meant giving orders. But anyways he had gotten used to leading and could do it right. Like Steady he would put his family first, especially now that Valette was one of them.
Ezekiel confessed that he didn’t really hang out with much of the pack, something Steady had suspected, but not had confirmed until now. He knew his friend was more of the loner type, but seemed to make an excellent guardian to their pack, and Steady had no doubt he could count on the other male in times of need.

He spoke specifically of Niita, and Steady cocked his head a little to the side in thought. His intention had always been to bring Niita by his side as Alpha, but he didn’t feel it would be right to do that, knowing she hadn’t been with the pack that long. He wanted them to feel it was because she was a good leader, on top of being his mate. The friction it might cause to do it suddenly worried him. Beta might be a stepping stone, but there was something that held him back from that.

He didn’t suppose he was surprised that Ezekiel mentioned himself for Beta, though he didn’t do so in a cocky, or entitled sort of way. You realize it would mean managing the wolves directly more than you have to now? He felt the need to point that out, wondering if Ezekiel might feel overwhelmed at the prospect of having to interact a bit more with the pack.
I'm so sorry for the wait! I've been extremely busy and stressed out, so thanks for waiting <3

Ezekiel nodded at Steady's comment. He had realized this, and though he didn't particularly want to be more social, he wouldn't mind it. At least this way Anita would never mess with him again. And he felt he could do a decent job as beta, of course that would be tested if he was chosen for he job. I understand. It might even do me some good, help me socialize a bit more. He said so jokingly, however it was true. If his job description was managing the pack, he would have to actually manage the pack. Not only would that put him in position to check up on all of his pack mates, but also give him reason to check up on Valette. When would she return.

After a small pause, the grey furred male continued on, playful grin grown serious. I do understand what being beta means, I've actually done it before. It'll be different, and I'm in no way putting myself in the job. But if you chose me, I would oblige sir. You know I'm here to look out for you and our family. You're kind of like a brother. I guess. He wasn't one to get all reared up and sentimental, but his last comment was true and made him smile. Steady and this pack was the closest thing he'd ever have to a real family. He would give his life for every single one.
No worries at all! My life has been a bit hectic, too! <3

Steady chuckled. Well all know you need more of that, he said with a grin. In all honesty, Steady wasn't worried about Ezekiel and how he had come off a bit... stoic when he first arrived. Knowing the male better these days, he was confident that Ezekiel simply took time to trust, and Steady admired that. Sometimes being too trusting himself, it was an asset to have someone on his side to bring him back to reality.

He nodded as his friend spoke, realizing he hadn't know Ezekiel had been a Beta before. What was your other pack like? he asked, wondering. His expression softened when Ezekiel mentioned how he felt. It was bittersweet for Steady, who had lost his own brother earlier this year. He wasn't sure if he would be dishonoring FitzDutiful by giving Ezekiel that title. You know I think of you as family, too, he said with a smile, which was true. But, he wasn't ready to call him brother. He would need to work out his feelings about it first, to make sure the guilt was gone first.
Ezekiel smiled at Steady's comment. This pack really had become his family, and it felt good to know that Steady felt the same about him however something else had come up, something that Zeke pretended he didn't hear for a moment. Ignoring the question would only make Steady suspicious, but he opening up about Winter's Bluff was like walking on egg shells. His facial expression dropped from playful and happy to more serious. His muscles tightened and his ear flicked anxiously. It was silly, to get so rattled over the thought of the Bluff, but he could never forget what they'd done.

It was... He cut himself off, debating on how to continue. Strict. Very different. My mother was alpha, and she was... a real bitch. She didn't care much about me or my siblings. She wanted us to be something we weren't. Someone he was. She trained us to fight for her, she wanted us to be the best we could. I thought she was right, until I realized that what she wanted from us was cruel. That's why I left. Sort of. He left out the parts that included what he'd done. It wasn't a place that I wanted to be, it's not like Silvertip at all. He hoped his explanation was up to par, and through his posture and expression it was clear that it wasn't a topic he wanted to linger on.
His expression was curious as Ezekiel spoke. Steady could tell it was a subject that his friend spoke easily on, and he couldn't very well blame him after hearing about his old home. Steady hated that it seemed Ezekiel had to be raised in a manner in which he was so obviously not suited for. But, the Alpha also realized something else. You know, no matter how much you might hate the past and what has happened, it got you to where you are now. And I'm thankful to have you here, he said sincerely.

He hoped that could put a more positive spin on how Ezekiel looked at his past. He wasn't sure who would be here now, trying to lift up the depressed Alpha, if it wasn't Ezekiel. Maybe no one would have and Steady would have continued to spiral downwards. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. Rising to his feet, knowing he wouldn't ask his friend more of the past, Steady thought a patrol might do him some good. I think I'm going to go patrol. You're welcome to come, if you feel like it, he offered.

Fade with yours? <3
Steady was an avid listener, and at first Ezekiel was worried that the alpha would keep prying. But he didn't, and instead offered a small thought. It was true, what the dark wolf said, if not for his history, he wouldn't be here in the present. He thought about it often, where he'd be if he had carried out the mission his mother had assigned him. Everything he'd done had led him here, and he was glad for at least that. He nodded, but didn't respond. While Steady's words were true, there were things the other still didn't know. Things that not even his friend could put an optimistic spin on.

Steady rose to his feet, Zeke looked to the sky. A bit of time had passed from when they'd first started the conversation. Time always seemed to slip through the cracks. Steady offered Zeke to join on his patrol, and the large grey male smiled. Right behind you. He stood, shaking his pelt and prancing to the border to get some resting energy out. A good patrol always eased his mind, and now he had a friend to do it with.

That was such a sweet thread <3
