The air stung Kalika's nostrils as it drifted through in the midst of the eve. There was little noise to be heard beyond the slight raucous of the Sea and what light remained beamed purely from the Moon. It was only the three of them — Kalika and the Mothers — stuck in a strangely comfortable limbo. She sat beyond the shore, submerged to the joints in water, whispering to the pair for guidance. It was something she had taken up since finding Calypso, but it had only become a ritual since being allowed to claim Adept. Perhaps it was because she felt unworthy of the title that she longed to prove otherwise.

Calypso was left to her own devices not too far down the coast; she could be heard but not seen. Knowing where the girl was at all times gave Kalika a sense of comfort, for she thought it was too early for her to meet some of the less worthy members of the band. Gabe had abandoned them, which was to be expected after his incident with Kalika, and Chelan had already learned his place in regards to the girl. The only one who remained in question was Whip, and tonight seemed the night in which that would change.
