Wick had found a warm place among the surrounding cold. Warm and steamy, and above her head were clouds. This mountain was quite strange. She was unsure what to make of the steam and warmth, but it was a welcome respite compared to everywhere else had been so far. She hoped that maybe the warmth of the area would draw out some small animals for her to eat. Winter was taking its toll on her body and her ribs showed through her fur, despite its thickness. The wolf part of her brain—the part she did not know existed—thought that joining a pack would be her smartest option. But her coyote brain—the only heritage she’d ever known—was extremely wary of wolves. Wolves hated coyotes and sometimes killed them. No. Wick would join no pack. She had always been a loner, and a loner she would remain. If she didn’t make it through winter on her own, then she did not deserve to live, anyways.
