The snow fell—a constant curtain of white as the wind swept past. The darkness had fallen over the creek, blanketing it further in silence.

Constantine was growing tired of silence. He had been silent when Aria had stepped down from Donnelaith as it’s Alpha, both of them turning the reins to Deirdre. A fire had ravaged his family and home when he had remained silent at joining Moonspear. He had remained silent, quietly gathering members for Ravensblood Forest, before moving his mate and growing family to the Creek, upon request.

He had been silent under accusations. He had been silent as he watched the numbers of his pack dwindle.

The time for silence was over. The mass of ebony fur remained by the edge of the creek, his eyes studying the rushing waters that refused to freeze—refused to bend to the whims of winters rules.

He was done bending as well.
maybe bump to present day? <3

aria came upon him in the territory, looking stone-faced and stoic. she did not know how to approach him -- if she even though. but a gentle worry flooded her features, and she found herself drawn to checkup on him.

"constantine?" came her voice, soft and bell-like. in her pale gaze was concern, and she searched him over with it for something. what was wrong? what was happening? she had been so quiet among the pack lately -- not wanting to stir the pot or draw attention to herself. she'd even avoided constantine, though through her duties she'd seen him often. she wondered if she was the cause for his turmoil.
He knew who approached him without finding the need to look back and study her. Aria had avoided him—possibly when he had needed his best friend above anything else. A low rumble escaped him as he exhaled softly, his expression remaining neutral as he continued to study the winding creek.

He wouldn’t tiptoe past any of it. Not to shield her from heartache or hurt feelings. “You’ve been avoiding me.”
her brow furrowed, tail flicking as the accusation flung -- and not a false one, at that. aria knew.

"i don't want to cause any more problems in your family," aria said, voice firm, void of hurt but her gaze betrayed her, "durnehvirr has returned. your children think i'm a monster. i'm avoiding you because i'm tired of causing you more pain." it was true, and even if he denied it aria knew it was. she caused problem after problem for constantine and his family... and all she wanted was for him to be happy.

"if i didn't think it'd hurt you more, i would've left the pack altogether by now." honest, but brutal. aria regretted saying it, but she was glad she did.
Her words caused his ears to pull back—his lip finally curling up as his fiery eyes sought her diminutive form. He could counter many of her points—that his children didn’t know her, that she practically had already left him in her avoidance. But there were only two points he could truly focus on, and the shadowstalker slowly rose to his full height, looking at her as everything he had suppressed within the past surfaced, and with a vengeance.

“You’re not what tore my family apart. You don’t own that, and if you try to put that on your shoulders, Aria, then goddammit, you need some sense.”

Never before had he spoke so harshly to her—and he slithered toward her now, his nostrils flaring as he looked at her, willing her defiance to push itself to her own brutal honesty. “Is that what you want? To leave?”
"then why do your children blame me?" she asked, sharper than her usual tone, her ears flicking downwards, "your wife -- she has hated me since the moment i stepped into the creek. before that, even." aria hadn't known that for sure -- not really. but she'd always had an inkling of a feeling that it was true. and constantine had never told her it wasn't

she wavered, now, shoulders tensing. "i don't know what i want," she admitted, a break in her voice, but her expression still stiff, "i haven't known anything but you in moons and i'm tired of making your life harder."
Wooowwww I did not expect this thread to blow up at all... lmfao
He snorted. “Because they’re children,” he reminded her, not able to seek an excuse for Talos’ desperate need to wear the downfall of he and Durnehviir’s relationship as a sturdy shield against everyone and anything—while still pinning the blame on Aria. It was obvious the girl had overheard the argument. It was impossible to reconcile with her, as she avoided him just as well as the other women in his life.

As she continued to talk, Constantine refrained from rolling his ways—perhaps in a way that was almost like his brother. Aria was determined to shoulder Durnehviir’s insecurities on her shoulders, and Constantine’s patience was wearing thin.

And then she continued to—the claim that he was all she knew now, and stating it in the way that somehow felt as if she were twisting the words to once more be his fault again.

“Durnehviir’s jealousy was created by her alone. I fucking refuse to feel guilty over maintaining my friendship with you because I had told her once before of you and how close we had been and she chose to believe that I would leave her for you. Own that if you want to—I won’t.”

As quickly as he had stood, the stocky wolf turned again, settling stubbornly on his rump at the side of the creek, his gaze burning as he stared at the lands before him and away from her. “I’m going to need you to figure that out, then. You don’t get to play on your past that caused you to lose your memories. You’ve had plenty of time to build new ones—forge relationships. Do something with yourself. Here. You’re the only one holding yourself back. Not my kids. Not Durnehviir.”
because they're children -- children were not stupid! aria snorted in her own response, her teeth clicking in agitation, but she did not verbally respond. and then she let him go on, because she was not rude, but her tail lashed behind her in a catlike manner as he spoke.

"i am not playing on my past!" she shot back, white fire blazing in her eyes, "with who, constantine? there is no one here." ah, it was a low blow, and aria regretted it (again) as soon as she'd said it. her anger halted, gaze lowering, but she simmered still. "every time i try there is just another whisper about me that ripples through the pack," she added, gruffly, her ears flicking. but that was playing the victim, wasn't it? she had nothing else to say to him -- she didn't even know what. maybe he was right, after all, but aria still felt so targeted.

"why is it so bad that i care so much about what your family thinks of me? -- or doesn't, i don't know," she asked finally, ears pressing forwards now, "you mean the world to me -- and it... and it fucking sucks that they don't like me."

me either. also god only knows if aria is making good points lmfao
As quickly as he had fired up, the man felt the sag of defeat shoot through him at her final words—that she so desperately wished his family accepted her, loved her, as much as he did. She was his best friend, his confidant. She had, for all intents and purposes, been his first love, even if it had been unrequited. She had felt the pain he had felt when he lost his father. She had loved his sisters like they had been her family.

The idea of not having her in his life was too much, and his ears slid back to his skull, his broad muzzle reaching out to tentatively nudge at her cheek. “You mean the world to me, too. Durnehviir is…was insecure in our relationship…and Talos took that to heart. Just let them get to know you.”
