Time  Little while after midnight
Soft n SAD Series E3 S1 @Vercingetorix

The moon kisses the lake as the world roosts, drowsy with winter and settling into a deeper phase of night. Midnight itself found the skayona, willowy and swelling, draped along weathered crags engulfed with her ever-eddying thoughts. Although Hougeda wasn’t at all like her private cove, she still sought for a lulling quiet from all the commotion and disquiet of the cliffs.

Passing a herb-dusted paw over her scarred brow and down her muzzle, she lifted somnolent eyes to the incessant waves that whispered just out of reach. A breath was drawn from her lungs in heady reprieve that slowly worked through her mind. She never asked for world peace, never truly wanted it; but she would savor all that they now beheld for now, warrior or no. Perseverance was her intention regardless.

Unable to keep herself situated, she rose to her felt paws in a graceless wobble; shivered out her tendered body for some self-comfort. Tail feathering with reserved hope, Bounkola began to meander the midnight shore, ears restless. Slumber lurks right at the edges of her star-numbed mind, but remains indecisive of taking her into its soothing veils. It was infuriating.

And it left her drifting, sleepless. Now, hobbling her way about the murmuring lake, she peered into the gloam for noapte. Of course, assuming he wasn’t already asleep. If there was anyone who needed it the most right now, it was V—

The astronomess halted, silver brow furrowing in uncertain unease, as she felt her womb... flutter? Faith she might have for all Olive may’ve told her, but fear for what wasn’t understood, regardless of words, had her trembling in place. Eyes waxed to full moons, and the furrow of her brow deepened, as did the... the tumbling of her belly.

In this very moment, it didn't matter how much or how little they'd spoken to another, felt the other, since their ordeal: steps became fleet but hesitant as Aure gave soft, anxious chirrups into darkness. "V-Vercingetorix?"
He wasn't jumping at the opportunity to heed her calls, but he heard the anxiety in them, and thought he would be a damned fool if he didn't at least check up on her. She was carrying his children, for god's sake. Whatever things they had to work out between them, they at least needed to reach an uneasy peace for the sake of the kids.

What is it? Verx asked softly, meeting her halfway. He looked her over, checking for obvious signs of injury or distress. You okay? Kids okay?

It was hard to look at her after everything he'd said and done. He knew from the start that she was too good for him, and now that was proven fact. His gaze, murky and unsure, fixed on the tip of one of her ears, rather than her eyes.
The herbalist wasn’t prepared (would never be) for how deeply her heart thrummed at the sight of him. How her springy ribs shivered out a breath, soul keening. It took her a moment or so to find her voice, ”I... I, I’m sure I am well. It’s only...” She held herself from him, as if she thought herself too frail, too paling to be in such familiar quarters with him. ”My belly, it— I think ze copii are kicking. Olive told me what it would feel like, but...” How her delicate shoulder cinched inward, how she kept her traitorous eyes on his shadow, nevermind his nose — all spoke hesitancy. As if even this meeting pulled aside this despondent curtain that now lingered between them.

She’d carried her own guilt with her; subtle as it was, like delicate filigree, but there all the same. It had draped itself about her withdrawn airs like some private, melancholic shawl. This, she wore with what she thought was befitting and proper — tending to him from the start had been her fault, hadn’t it? And then she’d only pushed him further when he was already so strained, like the fool she was; knew that she tampered with a storm, but soared for its eye either way.

For the past few weeks they’d been apart, missing him aside, she’d taken care of herself as she could — and worried over how torn he must still be. Either he would be further repulsed by her or not, but she finally looked into the murky depths of his eyes all the same; slim jaw worked voicelessly for a few heartbeats, ears pressing back into the down of her mane, "I'm so sorry, intruding, I-" Not just in this moment, but... in the last, too.

Actually? Damn it all: ”I needed to see you.” Not wanted, although it was quite true — but needed to. Not just for all this uneasy tumbling of the children, for the children; Aure wasn’t one to toe around for the reasons she felt the way she did.

A tremor worked her skull, took her gleaming eyes to the moonlit view of the lake. She could never hate him, condemn him, think ill of him; only her cretinous tongue, even now. But Aure truly believed she had been in the wrong for his flare up — the entirety of it — and the last thing she ever expected would be an apology from him.
Does it--does it hurt? He'd never paid much attention to pregnant women; he'd never stuck around a lady of his long enough to see her stomach swell. This was a novel experience, and it was both interesting and terrifying. What was it like to have something within you?

He grew noticeably uncomfortable as Aure admitted she needed to see him, and grimaced a little, though for his own sake, not hers. Aure. . . Verx trailed off, a small sigh escaping his nostrils. For a long moment, he grappled for the right words. Hell, at this point, were there any right words? Nothing he could say or do could erase what had happened.

Then his eyes met hers, and the instant connection was shocking in intensity. I'm sorry for acting out like I did, he finally admitted. I don't handle grief well at all, and I turn into an asshole when I feel trapped in a corner. Part of what I said was true, but not all of it, and I sure as hell didn't mean to say it like that. You don't deserve that.
Earlier, she’d shaken her head; it only felt like a fluttering, but rounded, as if joints had yet to form. It was as if her womb was made of amber, but—

As always, she returned to him as he said her name, heard the sigh and how he tried to word himself out. His eyes, crackling, kept her ensnared as the rest of her listened to his confessions; it was her turn to fidget, ears curving at the apology, and then pressing back into her pale ruff.

”Everything you said, I... I knew. Know. Have known. You are your own male; you be with who you wish, and you bed who you want. What I said, it... it wasn’t... it’s not...” It was her turn for her jaw to wire shut. Her demeanor was so heavy-lidded, so delicate; more daunted at this curtain between them than of him. “We are allies in this raising, and... and that is ze way I meant it. I pushed you when things are already so frayed. That is all, I... I am sorry, too.”

In the meantime, she reclined into a sit, her eyes only flickering from his searing one for a heartbeat. Just as with Takiyok, her attempt of veiling herself in some refined sense was quivery, meager. Mate— allies, mutuals, no matter how her heart yearned for him. Romance wasn’t needed to raise children, and— and she soon cinched her shoulders inward, peering into his eyes again, gleaming. ”I... you are forgiven, Verx. You don’t deserve to be cornered like that, though.”
It still wasn't right between them. Maybe it never would be. He hated to think that he had done irreparable damage, but then, he'd done damage the moment he'd lain with her. She had given him her heart, and he in turn had changed the entire course of her life by giving her children.

And the worst thing was that this had happened many times before. Except before he could know it, he'd fucked off. So he was trapped, and it wasn't her fault. He'd promised to stay, to help raise her children. He'd put himself in a cage.

I know what I am, Vercingetorix said. I like my freedom. It's not just about 'bedding who I want,' although that's pretty nice, too. This kind of commitment, this relationship--it's new to me. I've never had a mate, Aure. I've never wanted one. But that doesn't mean things might not change.

He stared down at her, gaze serious. I promise I won't act like a dick, if you promise to let me come around in my own time. I'm gonna raise these kids; I won't abandon them, ever. But for now, you gotta know that I can't give you more than that. I don't want you to suffer because I'm not enough.
Throughout his piece, she’d tipped her head one way, gently, and then the other; and altogether regarded him with a quiet, accepting countenance. She found herself nodding along with him once he finished, drawing herself up a bit more, ”I— I have never been mated either. And how to act within relationships, I... I’ll admit I’ve been stumbling along, unsure if anything is being done right. I am... I am rather inexperienced, with all of this.” A flustered little pause. “When I first came to you, I told myself I would let you, ah, come about in your own time, as you say. I... I promise that to you. I promise, too, to not... er, let my emotions overwhelm ze both of us.”

Despite her slight sheepishness, she still met his serious gaze; her own silver and stolid. ”I stay by your side not only because... because of ze children,” reiterated, since he knew of her heart already, ”But because you are such a friend to me, too. You say you are not enough? I say that ze male who is enough is within you, somewhere. Perhaps my faith is foolish,” a shrug of thin shoulders, ”and whether or not that male emerges for yourself, for me — I cherish it all.”

Her own tangent was unassuming, gentle; but rather than face him, she turned aside, facing the enshrouded evening as her lashes listed with some fatigue. (Not wanting to crowd into him again.) Ears curved back again, not quite looking at him, but as the silence lapses between them, her scarred muzzle canted in his direction. ”I... will respect your freedom. I also promise that this is ze last of my speeches; that is suffering in itself, no, Verx?” murmured his name with a soft dimpling of cheeks, which she carried with a new coyness on her tongue.

All hesitant, but she swept her tail about her paws, patient for whatever else he wished to say. For now, though, she let her gaze linger upon the expanse of moonlit water, an almost serene air beginning to drape itself about her delicate, ivory form. They still were hurting in their own ways, yet to entirely mend, but... she knew they would grow from this, stronger than before.

Aure supposed that, although she’d known how things were between them, it was different hearing it from the lips of the male himself. ”I am glad we are able to speak like this... dragoh-! she stuttered, gasping soft; silver brow creasing at a sudden, strong, more particular flurry in her womb. It had her shivering, half-whirling to Vercingetorix out of instinct.
He's not, though, he almost said when she mentioned the part about what was inside of him. He's not there. He never will be. The most commitment Vercingetorix had ever made was to his kru. He couldn't imagine any kind of serious ties outside of that, barring the relationship he'd have with his children. And even then. . .

God, he didn't really even like kids. What if his turned out to be just like the rest? What if he hated them?

Verx snorted at her jest, trying to push aside the negativity that had begun to fester. I can bear it, he said wryly, but before he could joke further, she had broken off. His eyes widened slightly, glancing to her belly. More kicking? he asked (no shit, Sherlock). His mouth twitched uncertainly. What is it like?
Eyes creasing, she gave a meager nod, her own lips thinning to mirror the uncertainty drawn upon his own. ”It,” faltering, ”It is like... a dull ache, sometimes. But it is—it is as if I have butterflies in my belly. Not unpleasant, and I am not entirely unused to it,” closed her eyes against another tumbling; another meek flush. ”It is only... different. Surreal, to think I have true life growing within me.”

Expecting mothers were meant to beckon the fathers over, to feel how the womb fluttered. That was what had always been an archaic tradition, right? But — should she? The last time they’d lain together (well, not in the way she longed to, unfortunately), she’d kissed him all over and had, unintentionally, ushered him from her arms. Did she deserve to hold him again? Did he even want to?

Her pale jaw wound shut once more, letting her gaze rest on Verx’s shadow. Without saying a word, she carefully draped herself at the water’s edge, and waited. Lacing herself on her side, she subtly curved her belly to him, tail curling a bit anxiously at her hocks. From their bairns in her belly, and the oversensitivity it brought; how faintly she quivered.

The whole time, Aure kept her eyes averted; letting him come to her, if he wished. (She wasn’t one fit for commandeering, anyway.)
He listened carefully, nodding at intervals, eyes flickering to her belly. When she lay down and presented herself to him, Verx found his gut filled with a strange mixture of fear and arousal. Pushing it all down, he came closer, and closer still, and then gently placed a forepaw atop the swollen mound of flesh, just behind the ribs.

There! A flutter and a press against his pad, and his gaze, filled with awe, met hers. Goddamn, they are moving around in there, he chuckled, one corner of his mouth lifting in a nervous smile. He kept his paw there for a while, enjoying the feeling of their children so close to him.

You're right, that is surreal, Vercingetorix whispered. But then it's actually really real. So real that it hammered the truth home to him, in that instant. He was going to be a father. A father of children that he would actually know.
How long had it been since they’d had another? How long had this ache for him gone on for? How could she have evaded it for such a time, until it entirely consumed her as it now did? The first caress of his paw at her womb — no, the incremental nearness of him had her flushing and paling, and until their eyes met over his words, she liked to think she’d been doing a courageous thing, being aversive.

Up until now, she’d listened to Verx’s raptured, albeit nervous, remarks with a gentle smile of her own apprehensiveness. Up until now, she welcomed the touch, and the press of her womb that fluttered in return. ...And yet, sensing his realization that their children were real, and the feeling of him decidedly situating more into that role of father, still hesitant but assured —

Her loins couldn’t have been more taut, more inflamed. With all that had happened, did he still burn for her? Become so enshrouded with a fever that could only be cured by the decadence of each other? And her tongue was so heavy, and speaking — she couldn’t, wouldn’t. Not when she was smothered by her own scent of warmth and milk; by her arousal and the proximity that had her breast fluttering. Not when she was so ravenous, brimming with all these shivering nerves —

The breath she’d been holding came out in a stuttering, needing gasp; so soft it might as well just be another murmur of the lake itself.

But Verx would know; and that’s why, after the next several moments crawled past, she made to evade him. And evading, in this case, meant blathering some paltry excuse of ”I—“ as she shimmied away from his reaching paw, situating herself onto her elbows. Aure would’ve made to rise (all wobbly) in that heartbeat, had it not been that her traitorous eyes were now held captive by his own. A little keen left her, her ivory form shuddering, faintly, with another quickening.

So, there she was: pale fur all mussed, poised and trembling on her hip and elbows, and staring at him with that blown, heavy-lidded, demurely ravished look that she hadn’t presented him with in two months. He was in her blood, he was roaring through her veins with such a searing heat it almost ended her; it ripped the trappings of her modesty from sternum to crown, made the argent of her eyes gloss and flare over —

Her ears curved back further, bedding into the porcelain ruff; frowning more in her last, weak whimper of protest was: ”V-Verx—“ And even that plea, whatever it was, came out in a low, simmering huff. But she was kept in place by his presence, and her own urge to rise went ignored. Aure had told herself she’d only come to him out of anxiety for their children, and yet...
And suddenly, the atmosphere between them changed, in an instant. She was staring at him all sultry, and he felt the all-too familiar twinge in his loins. The arousal, this time, was conflicted. He'd never porked a pregnant lady. Was that even. . .allowed? Would it affect the kids in some way? He couldn't imagine being too happy, as a fetus, by the jostling.

Uh. . . he murmured, unsure. His eyes flickered down, then back up to hers, searching, questing. He let out a small chuckle, shaking his head in bemusement.

Like, did they get even more pregnant this way? Was he about to have ten kids?

Verx folded himself down to lay beside her, gingerly, farther away than they had cradled each other before but still well within her bubble of personal space. I'm out of my element, here, he joked, though his gaze was still very serious. With all of this.
Aure followed each movement with her eyes, the silver of them melted into something of languorous intent. As far as she could recall, it was a rare, rare moment when she decided to masque as seductress, rather than how it usually went between them. It wasn’t that she never meant to take him seriously; it was when he made the mistake of settling down alongside her that she truly became rattled. In this heartbeat, she knew that neither of them were leaving this lake until they ravished another.

Near enough to taste, far enough to be untouched. Or was it the other way around? As her ivory, scarred face murmured into something lazier, ravenous, Aure suddenly decided she didn’t care to know. A pale ear flickered absently at his words, and she had to blink seven-several times in order to give Verx something better than the mere ”Hm.” she proffered him with. If she meant to tempt him, she’d have to think through the heady veils of hunger. ”I... I do not mean to make you uncomfortable. It is only how I cannot resist you.”

Slowly, enunciating through the all-too familiar husk her voice now took on, ”You will learn, Verx, with ze children, with... us. I have no more knowledge of mothering than you have of fathering. Nobody,” huffing at her own fumbling, blinking blearily, ”nobody is ever able to learn how to parent overnight. But we will do this, together.“ Ears curved back, lifting a silver brow at staring him from beneath them, ”You did not need to acknowledge them, or offer raising them with me. But you did so without my asking, and it is... it is more than most would do. It—”

What was it? Commendable? Admirable? Masculine? Utterly deserving of her even when Verx had never thought himself to be? Her waxen breast fluttered, ears pressing back further as she slowly rose to her dainty paws; kept her head low as she began to prowl about him. A gleaming, hushed lust had blown her pupils wide, so much so that only a sliver of argent love remained in her eyes.

Aure began at his flank, unseeing even as she peered at him from the corner of her vision, gauging his acceptance of this. Her breath was warm, her next words a heavy pant as she mouthed at the strong round of his hipbone. ”I learnt quite some time ago that claiming brings no harm to children... nor does it produce more.” Her next sigh was more of a quiet tremble, poring over this piece of him with a tender, faint lovebite. It was evident in her voice; even as she certainly wasn’t the seductive type. But Aure would be damned if she wouldn’t make an effort, however graceless, for tonight and for him.

Something that could’ve been called a smirk — from Aure, of all wolves — ghosted at the corner of her lip. ”I wouldn’t know how it feels, of course; I am sure that you wouldn’t know, either.” The words were an invitation; a feathering dare at that bold gall of his. As she stepped around him, coming along his other flank, she preened phantomish at the dark ribs, following them up to the broad shoulder.

And then she draped herself alongside him once more, settled primly on her belly; presumably at the same respect that he’d done towards her — so near, but not quite. Ivory-thin tail swept along her hocks as she lilted, luxuriously stretching once more: ”Would you like to learn with me, dragostea?
Everyone had their Achilles' heel, and his happened to be his cock and balls. (Some might say it was a defect of his sex, but Vercingetorix had even less self-control than most.) With each movement, each touch, his trepidation and anger and resolve all melted away until he was dark putty in her paws. Her words were meaningless to him, just gentle murmurs against his flesh. Flesh was all that mattered, now.

As she stretched out with a question, he settled ever-so-slowly against her, finding the most comfortable position for the both of them, his hips astride hers, his stomach along her spine. Yes, Verx whispered against the curve of her neck, the sound drifting up to tickle the feather-light hairs around her earlobe. He nipped that, gently, briefly. I'm always down to try something new, he chuckled, voice a little hoarse.

He began to move against her at a crawling yet insistent pace, hoping she'd move her goddamn tail out of the way before Hypothetical Offspring Nos. 5.1-5.2 million (or however many fucking little swimmers there were) ended up on the floor of the apothecary instead of where they really belonged. Well, not like it mattered, now. Still, waste not, right?

The participants have indicated the following reason(s) for this warning: filth

He billowed down around her like night itself, and she let the heft of him shrug her shoulders forward and meld against her; as when she’d been in heat for him, she rubbed the small of her spine up into him. His hips had drawn away, but caught on the backs of her quivering thighs not a pulse-beat later; chased her, and pressed back in the same moment she clenched.

”O-ohhh-“

Breath flared from her, hesitant and shuddering, and rather than let him grapple for her ruff, her huffing, open-mouthed muzzle dove down. Her ivory neck curved against the stones, so she could eye back up at him as raptured and tender-sensual as ever; ideal for her to coax Verx towards the aching sweet-spot that was her pulse. ”S-... slowly, Ber-“ A soft, throaty gasp cutting her off.

Whether he heeded her or not, the descent of every torturous, decadent inch of him — from the moment he pressed in to the moment he hilted her — had her writhing against him intermittently, drooling a little bit against the stones. ”T-two months s’ve been ze e-end of uss,” she slurred, poking her ass up and sculpting it against him as much as she could.

Aure was, promptly put, being ‘made a mess of’, and they’d only just begun — but she nuzzled at the stones, groaned and whimpered softly at the deep, languorous rolls of Vercingetorix into her. Her own body wove with his, the harmony of them punctured by little jerks of her boney hips and shoulders; but she was his. In body, in soul, whether he wanted both of those, only one — or neither at all.

And she was definitely not a seductress.
I can be slow, he murmured, finding his way within her and making sure he savored every centimeter. Even after such a long dry spell, he could be slow. He'd been savage with her before, pulling her tight, taking her flesh in his teeth. Now, he barely touched her save for, well, you know.

He kept time with the pulse he felt in her neck--no, half-time, for surely it was going much quicker than he should. Or quarter-time, even. . . Even toward the end, he only went deeper, not faster, and finally lost himself in the shallows, terrified of doing something to harm her or the babies despite her reassurances otherwise.

Verx breathed hard against her neck for a long moment before pulling away, laying on his side. Watching her. Ruminating on how much of an asshole he'd been. Wondering if their kids would take more after her or after him.
It was only the depth and draw of his thrusts that helped her lift her hips up into the inked cradle of his own; with him tonguing her throat, pressing in further and more lingering, it wasn’t long before she arced full and aching into Verx, wading right with him into those very shallows with a quivery groan of her own. More — she wanted more.

Even when he reclined, gazing at her listlessly, the glaze in her eyes hadn’t cleared up a smidgen. Perhaps a tad, but she wanted him again; now, even when she shivered on the cusp of too much stimulation too soon. Huffing in mild chagrin, Aure resumed her earlier position; propped up on elbows, looking out into the gloaming.

After a moment, filled with her own quiet pants as she recovered, a flick of her tongue along her pale jaws, ”You are thinking about it again, aren’t you?” Curving a brow at him, glancing sidelong. ”Worrying what they will grow into?” Her voice was airy, a little hoarse, unassuming, as she kept her eyes away.
He huffed a cold, quiet laugh, eyes meeting hers. More like who they'll grow into, Verx responded. His tail beat a little restlessly against the ground. Good job reading my mind, I guess. He lapsed into silence, slightly uncomfortable, gaze rolling over the gentle swell of her belly, wondering who was inside.

If they did take after his side, please, god, let them be like Helix, or Gavriel. Anyone but him.

Vercingetorix felt suddenly very tired, then, in many different ways. He lifted himself onto his paws again, shaking the dust from his pelt, and stared down at her, eyes unfathomable. Just howl if you need me, he said, flicking one ear idly to the side. I'll be around, promise.

Feeling somewhat ridiculous, he placed his muzzle against her belly, the movement there, for a moment, before offering her a small smile of farewell. He departed, then, shoulders a little hunched, the sensation of puzzled arousal still glowing hot between his legs.
