today's calamity was that he had squished something that had been moving before, and now it very much wasn't.

it flew around with orange and black wings that reminded him of his mum's eyes. it got very close, and cam excitedly pounced toward it, hoping to play. except when he sidestepped, there it was, flattened and still, no longer flying around. he prodded it very gently with one paw, and it only shifted a little in the dirt—no more than that.

he didn't understand. was it something he had done? had he scared it so badly that it didn't want to play with him? but surely it would snap out of its fright soon, right?

cam resolved to wait for it. he laid down with a whine, resting his chin on his outstretched forepaws. time ticked on, and he grew more despondent, but he would not give up. his friend would stir once more, fluttering into the air in a brilliant flash of color. he just had to be patient.
