sometimes, she felt as if she existed apart from the world around her. she'd become so good at moving unnoticed, first out of fear, than necessity, that twice now she'd passed within what felt like a hairsbreadth of a grazing doe, and who, on both occasions, had ignored her entirely. she felt that know, that dissonance, though it may too have been caused by the dawning hunger. the single rich meal had done little for her meager frame, save have her grow content for long days.

but it has fueled her, too. and the day's search finally comes to fruition when she falls upon a young hare, and for the first time in a fortnight tastes fresh prey. she's crouched over it now, eating carefully as not to miss a single scrap, though her attention is half on the great clouds that gather from over the mountains; heavy and sterling and threatening.
