@Nirali here we go! :D

Merrit was a very long way from home, if that was even a place he could call home anymore.

The late evening sun streamed like lazy fingers between the reaching branches of the evergreen trees, and filled the forest with a gilded glow. Deep shadows stole every surface the sunlight couldn't touch, to bathe the land in the dramatic conflict of clinging day and coming night. Ethereal, and tragically beautiful, if Merrit had been paying any attention to anything other than the surface of the lake.

The waters offered a dim reflection of the world about him - the long shadows of the trees, the golden hue of the evening sky, and the mountains he had crossed to reach this place. But his eyes focused on the skewed mimicry of his face between the ripples of the lake. Dark, and familiar. He had longed for this face, once. Had waited to see him return. And then he had sworn to never become him.

But when Merrit stared into the waters now, it could have been Stark who blinked back at him.

And his stomach churned. What had he done?
bringing this forward to present. also referencing araceli's absence for the past two weeks. other tag for reference as well
Little remains for her and her family at the lake, yet Nirali finds herself returning, trailing the thread of her hopes as if it is a scent on the breeze. Her sister has been gone far too long, leaving no word nor hint to where she might have gone. Vanished, as if she had never existed at all. But the fear in @Eleni's eyes always reminds Nirali that their sister is out there, somewhere.
And fine, most likely, she tells herself as the lake comes into view. Perhaps @Araceli had simply wandered too far — perhaps something caught her interest. Perhaps something like a dashing young man by the lakeside, engaged in a staring contest with his own reflection.
But Araceli's scent does not come to her as she approaches. The only scents in this place are stale, save her own and the boy's. Her gaze flits over him briefly as she draws up alongside him, settling on his reflection in the murky water. Never seen yourself before? She asks after a moment, masking her amusement at the notion. She doesn't want to irritate him just yet; maybe he has seen Araceli somewhere.
So absorbed with his worries and thoughts, Merrit fails to hear the approach of the stranger. He fails, even, to smell her. It is only when another face ripples into the water, that he jerks back, and whatever growl of warning slips through his throat is choked, simultaneous, by a strangled gasp.

Merrit catches her words, but meets them with a stupefied silence. His heart is racing at the speed of a charging moose; his ability to process reality takes its sweet old time to calm down and fall back into place.

"Well, you sure are gutsy," is all he manages to grumble, and he feels his skin warm beneath the fur on his cheeks. He knows she can't see that, but his ears betray his embarassment anyway, "is it your habit, to sneak up on strangers like that?" His fur already begins to lay flat; honestly, his whole body eased, the moment he saw her head wasn't made of ink. This one is something entirely other, adorned with the flash of garnet eyes admist the strangest array of patchwork he's ever seen -- and he can't help but find an irritating curiousity in this bizarre encounter.
