she knew that the high elk did not roam there any longer, nor did any of his disciples as they once had. the déorwine wolves had been right to move on, but to fall under the favor of him once more, they would need to make some changes to their doctrine.


why else would the high elk have left them? fréobearn wondered, if not for their neglect of his doctrine? their kind had become weak, too polluted by the way of the world, and that was why he’d performed this final purge of evil.

are they here? fréo asked quietly, her gaze following the drifting red of falling flowers. a breeze blew past her nose, sharing the scent of her siblings as an answer to her question. satisfied and determined, she turned her head upward to announce her arrival, then proudly wandered closer to the scent’s source.
