After the shouting match with his wife — ex-wife his conscience countered — Reyes needed to cool down. He wasn't far from the caldera; he couldn't let himself be driven in to oblivion by the woman he used to love.

Still loved.
Complicated, like everything else.

Point being — Reyes wasn't welcome at the caldera so he would set up camp somewhere nearby. The children were still precious to him, they were his, and while he would obey the unjust decision of Towhee and keep away from them, he wanted to be around should they have a need.

Fucking hell Towhee, you dumb bitch, he slurred to himself as he prowled the woods. Always had it in for me. Never trusted me, not really. Fuck! He lunges through the trees and temporarily grapples with a branch, snapping bits off, pulling at bark, gouging the surface with his teeth until he's too tired to fight further.

He has a length of bark hanging from his teeth which he spits out, and resumes his pacing, running on the emotional fumes in the aftermath of their fight. Images of the girls' faces deepen his resolve - while the memory of Caracal's nape in his teeth slowly emerges, bringing a new wave of self-loathing and passionate anger to the forefront.

Reyes would end up stewing over this for hours, drawn further from the caldera as he slowly understood how volatile his own thoughts could be, how dangerous Towhee thought he was; and if it were true, maybe she had been right, and he couldn't be around them.
